GENERAL SUMMARY:
The employee in this classification, under the direction of the assigned Command Officer and Mechanic Foreman, performs various automobile repairs and related services to County vehicles at the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs various automobile repairs and related services to County vehicles at the Macomb County Jail, to include, but not limited to, tune-ups, brake repair, electrical systems, exhaust systems, wheel alignments and tire changing and balancing.
Raises vehicles using hydraulic jack or hoist to gain access to mechanical parts on underside of vehicle.
Removes and disassembles mechanical units such as, but not limited to, engine, differential and transmission inspecting for wear and necessary repair or replacement.
Overhauls, rebuilds and/or replaces starters, crankshafts, cylinder blocks and other related mechanical units.
Adjusts brakes, aligns front ends, repairs or replaces shock absorbers.
Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors and windshield wipers.
Performs preventative maintenance duties on County vehicles, to include, but not limited to, oil changes, transmission service, rotate and balance tires and ensure proper lubrication.
Operates diagnostic equipment and utilizes various hand and power tools in performing essential functions.
Maintains, cleans and organizes the repair garage.
Completes and processes automobile work orders and related paperwork.
Operates an automobile to perform assigned job functions.
Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Education and Experience:
High school diploma or a certificate of successful completion of the General Education Development (GED) Test
Preferred Education and Experience:
Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Automotive Technology or related field
Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in automobile repair and maintenance
Required Licenses or Certifications:
Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license and operable, insured automobile for authorized travel
Certification as a Motor Vehicle Mechanic from the State of Michigan
Preferred Licenses or Certifications:
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification
COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES:
Knowledge of:
Diagnostic tune-up equipment; brake, drum and front-end alignment machines
Use of hand and power tools required for automobile repairs
Police vehicles and equipment
MS Word and Excel
Skill in:
Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships
Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
Effective written and oral communication skills
Ability to:
Read, interpret and carry out instructions of vehicle shop manuals
Complete and process automobile shop work orders
Work in an environment which embraces the county’s Dignity Campaign
Effectively speak, write and understand the English language
Effectively speak, write and understand a language other than English is preferred
Understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions
Accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files
Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries
