Summary

The School Social Work intern, under supervision, provides services to support students’ social and emotional well-being and collaborates with the school counselor, behavioral health therapist, teachers and other relevant individuals to support students. This includes completing needs assessments, referrals for community-based services and follow-up services.  

This is a unpaid internship.

Internships with our program require a 2 semester/3 quarter commitment and ideally start in the fall to align with the academic school year for the student population we serve. This time frame enables fulfillment of the contact hours required by most universities and a rich learning experience. Examples of duties

Perform assessments to identify student, family and school needs using social work principles, techniques and practices.

Provide supportive counseling, using multiple approaches, to address students’ needs as a co-facilitator in individual and group work.

Refer students and families to a variety of providers and services to meet various needs.

Monitor progress of students served to ensure needs are being met, adjusting if needed.

Conduct home visits with BHC staff and completes follow-up as needed.

Present education/information to students, families, and staff regarding social and emotional wellness and child development.

Document interactions with students in accordance with program protocols & requirements.

Develop knowledge of community and school resources to address needs and alleviate barriers for students. Work to create additional resources as needed.

Assist parents and staff in developing comprehensive strategies for supporting students in crisis at home and at school.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Requires current attendance in Masters of Social Work program with an accredited university.
