The Center for Technology Licensing (CTL) is Cornell University’s technology transfer office and manages Cornell technologies from Cornell’s Ithaca campus, Weill Cornell Medicine, Cornell Tech and Cornell AgriTech.
CTL’s mission is to catalyze technology commercialization to (i) develop products and services from Cornell innovations for societal benefit, (ii) promote new technology ventures to foster economic development within New York State and across the nation, and (iii) increase industry engagement by leveraging Cornell research.

CTL is seeking a Business Development & Licensing Associate (BDLA) to join the Physical Sciences Business Development and Licensing team at Cornell’s main campus in Ithaca, NY.
The BDLA will report to the Director, Business Development & Licensing – Physical Sciences and work under the supervision, direction, and oversight of that Director. BDLA will also support the functions of Business Development and Licensing Officers (BDLO).
The BDLA will have exceptional team working ability, communication skills, be service-minded, and serve as follows:
Inventor Engagement:
proactively establish and maintain good relations with faculty, staff, and students
promote faculty and Cornell research capabilities to external stakeholders
assume responsibility for reviewing and assessing new disclosures as assigned by the Director
Technology Marketing:
work collaboratively and proactively with Director, BDLOs, Intellectual Property Officers, and the Innovations Partnerships Group to:
(i) recruit and manage CTL Innovations Fellows and graduate student interns
(ii) review and assess work product developed under CTL’s internship program – non-confidential technology summaries and slide decks, prior art searches, company lists, and other materials that may be required
(iii) proactively contact potential licensees to showcase Cornell inventions and research capabilities
create technology bundles for specific markets and strategic partners
document and manage all marketing activities and contacts in an internal database
Business Development:
proactively identify, establish, and maintain relations with industry and investors
support company and investor visits as may be required
attend appropriate conferences and tradeshows
Contracts:
on behalf of the Physical Sciences and Engineering team assume responsibility for drafting, negotiating, and managing Non-Disclosure Agreements and Inter-Institutional Agreements
participate in licensing negotiations and as requested draft license agreements and amendments
in partnership with the MTA Coordinator, lead efforts to:
(i) develop strategic initiatives related to tangible research material monetization; &
(ii) draft, negotiate, and manage contracts related solely to tangible research materials
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with proven, strong knowledge in physical sciences and engineering
Strong interest in academic technology transfer with 3 – 5 years of experience, preferably in an academic technology transfer office.
Proven team player with ability to interact with a wide range of people in a professional and ethical manner, including colleagues, faculty, students, business development professionals, lawyers, and investors
Excellent communication skills – listening, presenting, and writing – with proven sensitivity and ability to manage confidential information
Service-minded, detail-oriented individual who thrives in a demanding and collaborative environment that encourages critical, strategic thinking with proven ability to also work and learn independently
Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
