About the role

Job Description

The Office of School Health (OSH) is a joint program of the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, responsible for promoting the health of 1.3 million school-aged children in approximately 1,800 public and non-public schools across New York City. OSH provides NYC Health Code-mandated clinical services, public health initiatives, chronic disease management, reproductive health care, and case management to ensure that students are healthy and ready to learn. OSH Physicians also review medical accommodations, respond to public health emergencies, and coordinate with community providers to support the health and safety of students.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
Under the supervision of the Assistant medical Director of the K-8 program, the CMS II (supervising Physician will: Orient, train and supervise School Health Physicians, including providing guidance for direct medical services, chronic disease management and case management
Work within the mandates, policies and protocols of the Office of School Health
Ensure the provision of mandated services
Attend to the health needs of designated school community
Provide direct clinical services to an assigned panel of schools
Serve as a consultant to the school physicians, school nurses and school administrative staff regarding school related health concerns
Support the development of school educational and prevention programs promoting the health and wellness of students
Complete Accommodation reviews and appeals (home instruction, transportation/Medical exception, Diabetes Medication Admiration Forms
Review, paraprofessional Reviews and Immunization Exemption Reviews)efficiently, using sound clinical judgment, coordinating services when appropriate
Participate in meetings concerning student medical needs at school
Provide clinical assistance in the event of an environmental or communicable disease occurrence
Function as a liaison for students with community health providers to resolve health issues that affect school functioning
Participate in the agency's Physician-on-call rotation
Maintain good public relations and to communicate effectively within the school community
Support all medical initiatives put forth by the Office of School Health, e.g. Asthma, Reproductive Health, Obesity and Diabetes Initiatives

Preferred Skills
- Experience with clinical and/or administrative supervision of physicians
- Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain good public relations develop rapport students, other clinical providers, school staff and parents
- Professional sensitivity when working with all racial, disability, linguistic and socioeconomic groups
- Knowledge of school health
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software programs
- Experience with Electronic Medical Records
