The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily financial operations of the department, ensuring accurate accounting practices and compliance with City policies and governmental standards. This role manages general ledger activities, financial reporting, reconciliations, all event accounting and close processes. The position also develops and maintains department-specific accounting procedures, oversees budget monitoring, and ensures proper documentation and internal controls.


The Accounting Manager supervises accounting staff, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to established guidelines. In addition to daily operations, the role leads department-level financial projects such as process improvements, system enhancements, and new reporting requirements. This includes planning, tracking progress, identifying risks, and communicating updates to leadership.


Examples of duties

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee daily accounting operations for the department, ensuring accuracy, compliance with City policies, and adherence to governmental accounting standards.
  • Manage general ledger activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, month-end close, and year-end financial reporting.
  • Oversee all financial aspects of department-sponsored events and entertainment activities, including budgeting, contract review, revenue tracking, expense reconciliation, and post-event financial reporting.
  • Coordinate and process event-related financial transactions such as ticketing revenue, vendor payments, settlements, and merchandise or concession accounting.
  • Develop and maintain department-specific accounting procedures, internal controls, and documentation to ensure financial integrity and audit readiness.
  • Monitor departmental budgets, analyze variances, forecast financial needs, and provide regular updates to leadership.
  • Manage procurement-related financial duties, including invoice approval, purchase order oversight, and compliance with City purchasing requirements.
  • Supervise and train accounting staff, ensuring consistent performance, accuracy, and adherence to established accounting standards.
  • Prepare financial reports and presentations for departmental leadership and assist with internal and external audits.
  • Lead and support departmental financial projects such as process improvements, system updates, and implementation of new tools or reporting requirements.

Qualifications

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Three years experience in accounting supervision and computer software application.

Preferred Education/Experience:
  • Minimum of 10-12 years of experience in event and municipal accounting and budgeting.
  • Strong understanding of event revenue, expenses, and the ability to read and understand TicketMaster reports.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
