The SCA’s Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions and renovation work of existing schools for New York City’s approximately 1.1 million students. Our projects are intentionally and thoughtfully designed; positive impact design is at the forefront of all our projects.
Our In-House studio is a multidisciplinary practice that is responsible for designing some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio as well as renovation work to existing schools. Our other two studios manage external consultants from design inception to completion. Our three studios are comprised of talented architects and engineers who are driven to deliver high quality custom designed, sustainable, and resilient public schools.

Job Description Summary
THIS POSITION REQUIRES HVAC EXPERIENCEThe Managing Engineer – coordinates project activities, guides interdisciplinary teams assigned to departmental projects, manages technical resources, and participates in the development of the technical resources required to properly scope and design projects. May supervise staff.
Job Description
Responsibilities include:
Level A
• Guide interdisciplinary teams assigned to projects.
• Coordinate architectural/engineering design activities related to new projects in the design phase.
• Ensure adherence to the project schedule, budget, codes, and/or SCA standards.
• Participate in day-to-day operations to address and resolve specific managerial, operational, and
administrative problems and inquiries.
•Perform managerial functions such as reviewing and writing reports, approving expenditures,
enforcing rules, making decisions about design-related services and materials, and/or making
recommendations regarding personnel selection.
• Participate in meetings on issues relating to departmental and interdepartmental functions of the department/unit.
• Perform related duties, as assigned
Level B
• Supervise staff, Engineers, Architects, and/or consultants assigned to projects.
• Manage technical resources, guides interdisciplinary teams assigned to departmental projects,
and participates in the development of the technical resources required to properly scope and
design projects.
•Provide technical oversight and guidance to teams in the development of the various design
projects to meet project requirements in alignment with scope.
•Conduct quality assurance ensuring adherence to SCA standards, design specifications, codes.
• May assign work to team members, address, resolve complications during the design project.
• May act on behalf of or absence of Studio Director and assume greater responsibility for projects.
• May act as Deputy Director.
• Performs specific duties based on assignment to a department, division, or unit within the SCA.
• Performs related duties, as assigned.
• May perform duties of a Managing Engineer - A.
Minimum Qualifications
THIS POSITION REQUIRES HVAC EXPERIENCE
Level A & B: A valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer. Baccalaureate degree
Addition requirements for Level A: Eight years of full time progressive experience as a Professional Engineer; four years must have been as a project leader, project engineer or major project contributor or a satisfactory combination of education and experience.
Additional requirements for Level B: Ten years of full time progressive experience as a Professional Engineer; five years must have been as a project leader, project engineer or major project contributor or a satisfactory combination of education and experience.
