Reporting directly to the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Tourism, Sports, and Entertainment, the Deputy Director plays a pivotal role in advancing the mission of promoting tourism, supporting community events, and facilitating film and TV production in the City of Boston. The Deputy Director oversees administrative, project management, and public-facing responsibilities, ensuring the successful execution of initiatives to enhance Boston's cultural vibrancy and economic growth. The Deputy Director will play a vital role in advancing the Mayor’s vision for a vibrant, inclusive, and culturally rich Boston, serving as a key leader in promoting tourism, supporting community events, and enhancing the city's reputation as a premier destination for visitors and residents alike.

Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Implementation:

  • Collaborate with the Director to develop and execute strategic plans for community events, celebrations, and tourism initiatives.
  • Lead the planning, development, and execution of special events and celebrations, including major parades, cultural festivals, and citywide ceremonies.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with external partners, city departments, and stakeholders to facilitate event planning and execution.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Economic Opportunity and Inclusion Cabinet, fostering partnerships to promote tourism and economic growth.

 

Project Management and Coordination:

  • Manage special projects and events under the guidance of the Director, ensuring seamless execution and adherence to timelines and budgets.
  • Support the supervision of the department's technical and production crew, providing support as needed for event logistics and operations.

 

Community Engagement and Tourism Promotion:

  • Network and collaborate with stakeholders to support and promote the tourism industry in every neighborhood of Boston.
  • Maintain relationships with key agencies and organizations involved in tourism promotion, such as but not limited to MeetBoston & the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority.
  • Assist in efforts to showcase Boston's cultural heritage and attractions to visitors and residents alike.

 

Administrative Support:

  • Assist with maintaining an inventory of mayoral gifts and assist constituents requiring information related to the office's activities.
  • Provide administrative support to the Director and senior management team, including scheduling, correspondence, and record-keeping.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  • At least five (5) years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience, preferably in coordinating and programming public and private events and/or the tourism, sports, and/or entertainment industry.
  • A bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Prior work experience in event planning and the tourism industry is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating initiative and decision-making skills.Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license and residency in the City of Boston upon hire.
  • Ability to maintain discretion with sensitive information and establish effective relationships with staff, partners, colleagues, and the public.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills, including public speaking and presentation skills; ability to communicate effectively and clearly.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications, Google Suite, Zoom, Publisher, and PeopleSoft.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese, and Vietnamese).
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
