About the role

Perform daily abstraction of cancer cases into the  Oncology Data database. 

Responsible for running and resolving EDIT’s prior to submission of cases to the State Central Registry and NCDB. 

Utilize CoC and State Cancer Registry data standards and coding instructions to determine all reportable cases. 

Abstract cases completely, whenever possible.  In cases where complete treatment data is not available, request this information from the managing physician or client contact as directed by client. 

Abstract cases within six months from the first date of first contact, or as indicated by client. 

Maintain a log to document the abstraction of all records as well as non-reportable cases 

Submit cases to the State Central Registry, if requested. 

Process case finding, follow-up and other registry duties. 

Maintain the suspense system, if required. 

Enter follow up and/or update information on patients who have been re-admitted to the hospital following the completion of an abstract. 

Perform duties in compliance with Company’s policies and procedures, including but not limited to those related to HIPAA and compliance. 

Utilize all available official references to perform reviews: to include but not limited to Standards for Oncology Registry Entry (STORE), International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, 3rd Edition, American Joint Commission on Cancer Staging Manual (current edition), Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Staging Manual (current volume), North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR), etc. 

Abides by the standards of the Code of Ethics as set forth by the National Cancer Registrars Association. 

Skilled in Microsoft Suite (Excel and Word) 

 

Key Success Indicators/Attributes 

Knowledge of cancer and its management, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, biostatistics and epidemiology, cancer data abstracting, database record management, cancer program management, and  Oncology Data procedures. 

knowledge of ICD-O-3, STORE Manual, SEER Manual, NAACCR Standards, and AJCC Staging Manual.  

Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and regional data reporting guidelines. 

Knowledge of coding convention and rules established by the CoC and NAACCR.  

Knowledge of CoC coding compliance and impact on accreditation. 

Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced, changing environment. 

Demonstrate ability to self-motivate, set goals, and meet deadlines. 

Maintain courteous and professional working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization. 

Demonstrate excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. 

Attention to detail, time management and excellent communication in written and spoken word. 

Adherence with both client and himagine specific quality and productivity standards, and detail specific data abstraction. 

Skill in operating a personal computer and utilizing a variety of software applications.  

Knowledge of CoC, standard compliance, abstracting compliance and HIPAA-HITECH standards affecting medical records and the impact on reimbursement and accreditation.

Work Environment 

This job operates in a remote home office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work 

This is a full-time position.  Days and hours of work are generally Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.  This position occasionally requires long hours and weekend work. 

 

Travel 

Travel may be required dependent on client’s need.
