As a Senior Database Engineer - PostgreSQL you will be a critical contributor to Healthie’s Platform Engineering team.

You will be joining a platform team of specialists. You will bring your domain expertise in postgres database design and deployment to join the team. You will be transformational in how we deploy postgres, how we scale it (horizontal + vertical), how we monitor it to know what's going on, and how we feed that back to fix healthie's data model.

Strong familiarity with ORMs, in particular Rails/ActiveRecord, is a big plus! 

 

Responsibilities: What you’ll be doing and held accountable for:

Extensive knowledge of Postgres deployment, operation, and performance at scale.

• Deployment architecture
• Excitement and confidence in scaling from 10k to 100k queries per second while reducing latency.
• Expertise in Postgres replication, partitioning, clustering, and cloud scaling strategies.
• Experience in database load balancing
• Familiarity with major cloud offerings, with an eye for potential implementation in medium and long term

• Postgres and Host Performance tuning
  • Establishing performance metric baselines for tuning.
  • Implement performance optimizations both internally to postgres, and externally (memory, io, cpu)

• Application behavior observation and improvement
• Observing application behavior to prioritize opportunities for query improvements
• Becoming expertly familiar with application schema in order to maintain a medium- and long-term roadmap
• Collaborating with feature-dev squads to facilitate schema and query improvements

• Availability
  • Deep understanding of Postgres availability, backup, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Knowledge of HA setups, including running HA PG clusters.
  • Understanding downtime limitations and strategies for achieving high uptime percentages.

• Monitoring, visibility, observability
• Continually improving performance and security instrumentation.
• Identify problem areas and collaborate with squads to identify and address concerns.
• Implementation of robust monitoring and alerting systems to detect issues before they become problems.

 

Qualifications: What we expect from you:

• You are an expert: Domain expertise in Postgres with experience in PgBouncer and/or other connection poolers, including strong knowledge and thinking about software design and code organization.
• You strive for Operational Excellence: Best practice experience with coding standards, refactoring, complexity reduction, and schema design.
• Tools & Tech Experience: Security & complianceInfrastructure and monitoring, including CI/CD construction and maintenance
• Problem Solver: Experience configuring and using APM tools for solving performance issues
• You bring hands-on experience: working with ORM systems which is a requirement along with Expertise with Rails/ActiveRecord.
