Physician Associate or Nurse Practitioner (Advanced Practice Provider/APP) - Molecular Imaging and Therapy

Department Overview

The Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is seeking a full-time Physician Associate or Nurse Practitioner (Advanced Practice Provider/APP) to join its team of professionals in the Molecular Imaging and Therapy (MIT) section. The department is committed to outstanding patient care, education, and academic excellence.

 

The MIT APP’s primary role is to provide coordinated, efficient, and high-quality care to oncology patients receiving radiopharmaceutical therapies as outpatients. This will entail working closely with other section staff including faculty, nurses, and technologists as well as collaboratively with other departments including oncology, radiation oncology, and surgical oncology. Additionally, the MIT APP will work with clinic management on process improvement projects as well as provide education to colleagues, staff, and students. This position affords significant flexibility as much, but not all, of the work can be done remotely.

Function/Duties of Position

Clinical Responsibilities:

• Provide medical care independently and/or in conjunction with attending physicians for oncology patients receiving radiopharmaceutical therapies in the outpatient setting and assist for those in the inpatient setting.
• Specifics of medical coverage in the outpatient MIT Clinic:
  • Assess a patient’s physical condition, labs, and imaging in order to appropriately manage and treat patients.
  • Assess patient condition when notified of an urgent need, and order necessary medications, or other supportive care interventions.
  • Help respond to and manage adverse infusion reactions and other emergencies
  • Provide direct oversight and guidance to nurses for clinical care
  • Work closely with oncology staff to coordinate the care of our joint patients.
  • Jointly or independently perform new patient consultations and place necessary orders.
  • Provide education to patients and staff (see details below).
  • Engage with pharmacists on treatment changes and PRN medications.
  • Assist with research studies, especially with physical exams, reviewing labs, signing orders, and helping to coordinate their care.
  • Ensure there is appropriate coverage at all times by working collaboratively with colleagues
• Provide comprehensive symptom management of complex patients by working collaboratively with oncology nurses, palliative care providers, social workers and others based on patient need.
• Participate in clinical trials. Deliver care to patients receiving treatment on clinical trials per protocol guidelines with timely notification of principal investigator and study coordinator and appropriate documentation of adverse events.
• Work in conjunction with community oncologists to coordinate post-therapy care.
• Make appropriate referrals to specialty care service within OHSU and outside of OHSU.
• Consult with specialty care providers when appropriate.
• Maintain communication with primary care providers and other individuals and agencies (e.g. skilled nursing facilities) as appropriate.
• Provide coverage for timely completion of prescription refills.
• Communicate with patients and family regarding their medical conditions, treatment plans, radiation safety precautions, and their progress.
• Identify patient needs early and communicate plan to patients, families, nurse case manager, and other healthcare team members.
• Work with nurses, technologists, social workers, nutrition services, pharmacy, medical assistants and others as needed to assure optimal patient care.
• Assure appropriate setting of care (ambulatory versus inpatient).
• Prescribe and supervise same-day anxiolytics for patient scans.
• Document subjective and objective findings, assessment and plan clearly and accurately in clinical notes according to OHSU guidelines.
• Adhere to best practice protocols and OHSU specific policies.
• Obtain training and education on safe management of patients receiving radiopharmaceutical therapies, including radiation safety precautions.

Education:

• Patient and family education regarding the therapy, side effects, and radiation precautions.
• Resident, NP, or PA student teaching.
• Collaborate with MIT team members to establish or revise clinical pathways and patient education materials.
• Coordinate onboarding and training of newly hired Advanced Practice Providers (APPs).
• Work with clinic and hospital staff to optimize order sets, patient instructions, and other infrastructure that supports patient care.
