Job Details
Under general direction of the Senior Director of Sales and Use Tax, the Director of Sales and Use Tax directs and oversees the handling of indirect tax matters on the organization’s behalf for the MWI Animal Health business segment. This includes but is not limited to management of compliance / tax return processes, coordination with state taxing authorities on tax controversy matters and management of indirect tax technology solutions.
Responsibilities
Direct all indirect tax compliance, administration, analysis and reporting (including 2,500 sales/use tax returns) for MWI affiliates and operations including closely managing service provider(s) or other consultants providing outsourcing services.
Conduct or direct tax research and analysis to determine the impact to MWI affiliates of indirect tax regulatory, legislative or judicial developments, and audit or administrative determinations.
Team with government affairs, legal, supply chain and other internal working groups to promote sound tax policy and to analyze and assist in effectively implementing and operationalizing any new or proposed indirect tax legislation.
Collaborate with the Information Technology group to optimize utilization of indirect tax software solutions at MWI affiliates, including utilization of Vertex software.
Extract data from various MWI systems and format/cleanse as required for tax reporting. Significant Excel experience and an eagerness to improve existing processes is a plus.
Direct the activities and assignments of MWI indirect tax team professionals, including the professional development of all team members. This includes identifying growth opportunities for team members and ensuring they receive proper training and experiences to develop as indirect tax professionals.
Direct all customer interactions in connection with establishment of new accounts and the resolution of indirect tax related issues; including timely and professional responses to MWI indirect tax inquiries.
Direct business licensing compliance, administration, analysis, and reporting including business license renewals and registrations for MWI affiliates and operations.
Directly responsible for the handling of all MWI indirect tax audits (sales and use, gross receipts, CAT, excise tax) with the goal of minimizing the eventual assessments, maximizing refund claims and offsets, maintaining a positive working relationship with relevant tax authorities, mitigating MWI’s tax exposures and amending MWI procedures as appropriate, consistent with operating considerations, to preclude future tax exposure.
Interacts with MWI (and Cencora) corporate, divisional and regional associates at all levels in the organization in the resolution of indirect tax issues.
Responsible for reconciliations and entries of indirect tax related general ledger accounts partnering with MWI and corporate financial accounting professionals to ensure account balance accuracy.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Education and Work Experience
Requires a Juris Doctor degree plus CPA certification along with broad knowledge of legal and accounting principles relating to indirect taxes. Normally requires a minimum of five (5) years of experience in tax, Big 4 preferred. Strong knowledge of indirect taxes in a multi-jurisdictional corporate tax environment, with at least two (2) years of experience at a manager level.

Strong knowledge of multi-jurisdictional indirect tax filings and related controversy; income tax experience a plus
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing Technology/Data Management skills a plus

Strong organizational skills; attention to detail Pharmaceutical, warehousing, and/or distribution industry experience preferred

Knowledge of Vertex, SAP, Microsoft Word and Excel; technical skills
