Job Summary
Hospitalist APP Providers in the Hospital Medicine Department are clinicians who provide clinical care for patients admitted at Duke University Health System hospitals. They support surgical and specialty services through consultative general internal medicine practice, as well as teach staff, graduate medical trainees, and medical students on inpatient educational rotations.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Hospitalist APP Providers will engage in direct patient care activities and medical/clinical practice as the principal component of his/her overall professional responsibility within the Department. Patient care activities will include, but are not be limited to the following:
- Assessment, evaluation, diagnostic determination, on-going treatment and clinical management of patients
- When necessary make referral for consultation
- Direct care planning
- Order medications and therapeutic treatments when warranted
- Authorize transfers
- Conduct risk assessment
- When appropriate, make determination of readiness and planning for discharge for inpatients in your care.
- Direct contact and consultation with patient family members, friends, advocates, and others to ensure effective communication of patient status and care plans, and to encourage/ support an open visitor-friendly environment within the hospital environment.
- Extensive and on-going communications with community primary care physicians who routinely manage the care of patients currently in your care within the hospital
- Day-to-day patient contact/rounding/care management that actively encourages and includes professional input from all members of the patient care team
- Completes all clinical and professional records and documentation accurately and in a timely manner to assure compliance with local, state and federal regulatory, licensure and accreditation requirements.
- Work to create a positive work culture within cross-departmental teams
- Align your work with other Hospital Medicine initiatives.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Job Eligibility Requirements
Education
PA: Graduate of ARC accredited Physician Assistant Program
NP: Graduate of MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner Program for adult care
Certification
PA: PA-C
NP: AGACNP, ACNP, AGNP, FNP
License
PA: Current unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as a PA.
NP: Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as a NP.
Both: Federal and State prescriptive authority
Current ACLS certification required before hire
Experience
Inpatient APP experience preferred, but will consider new grad
Physical and mental requirements:
- Able to clearly articulate scope of practice and practices within those guidelines as an NP/PA in the state of North Carolina and within the Duke University Health System (DUHS)
- Able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively to solve complex problems
- Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leade
