POSITION SUMMARY
The Sergeant will supervise, consult, direct, advise, and instruct School Resource Officers, Alarm Response Officers, Investigators and other safety and security personnel on law enforcement relevant to duties. Investigates various complaints approve incident reports and monitor and evaluate the performance of subordinates, both sworn and civilian personnel. Sergeants will assist in providing support in strengthening school safety for students and staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
• Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Safety, or related field required
Certifications/Licenses:
• Valid Georgia driver's license is required
• Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification required
• Must hold a PBLE classification if POST certified after 1982 or the equivalent prior to 1983
• Must be able to maintain certificates required by standard operating procedures and state law
Experience:
• 5 years of experience in law enforcement in a traditional law enforcement agency or school environment required
• 2 years of experience in a supervisory role
• Experience with Atlanta Public Schools Police Department (APSPD) or another school police department preferred
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Supervise, coordinate, schedule, and evaluate the daily activities of School Resource Officers (SROs), Alarm Response Officers (AROs), Investigators, and civilian personnel
• Collaborate with school administrators and staff to promote a safe and secure learning environment through proactive planning and timely response to safety concerns
• Monitor police communications and deploy personnel to incidents requiring law enforcement services
• Respond to and supervise law enforcement activities during emergencies, critical incidents, and special investigations
• Review, approve, and ensure the accuracy, completeness, classification, and timely dissemination of incident and crime reports
• Investigate complaints involving personnel, administrators, staff, students, or the public and recommend appropriate resolutions
• Evaluate employee performance, provide coaching and mentoring, and support professional development through continuous improvement plans and performance management
• Develop, coordinate, and deliver training to ensure personnel maintain required knowledge, skills, certifications, and operational readiness
• Assign personnel, maintain staffing accountability, and coordinate coverage for absences, special events, and operational needs
• Attend supervisory meetings; communicate policies, procedures, operational updates, and departmental directives to assigned personnel
• Assist in the development, implementation, and revision of departmental policies, procedures, and operational practices
• Coordinate and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, and community partners
• Analyze operational data, prepare reports, and keep leadership informed of significant incidents, criminal activity, and unit performance
• Provide crime prevention education and safety presentations to students, staff, and community groups as requested
• Required to have prompt, regular attendance in person and be available to work on-site during regular business hours and as needed
• Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator or their representative
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Knowledge of Atlanta Public Schools policies and procedures
• Demonstrated experience working with youth and culturally diverse populations
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage students, staff, and internal and external stakeholders
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Outlook) and standard office equipment and systems, such as incident reporting software, copiers, scanners, and fax machines
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and responsibilities simultaneously while meeting deadlines
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop and implement effective solutions
• Ability to collaborate effectively with District personnel, community partners, and the general public
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse groups of individuals
