WORK LOCATION & SCHEDULE
- This position will be based out of The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL, however, candidates living within the Southern Company footprint (Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi) may be considered provided they are able to travel as needed.
- Work schedule (in-office, field and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office or at a plant/field site and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment).
- This position will require a mixture of both field and office work.
- Field work will include site visits to generation plants in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi and may require overnight travel, as well as, occasional trips to vendor shops located throughout the US.
- This position will require some travel (days and overnight, up to 50%).
- Limited relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.
JOB SUMMARY
This position will support the Southern Company Technical Shared Services goals and business results related to safety, compliance, budgets, people, and technical skills. This shall be accomplished by providing industry leading technical field support for both project management and field support demand services. This position will assist in defining the boiler maintenance strategies for the Southern Company fleet to identify and mitigate reliability risk in an economical manner. This position will assist with major capital boiler component replacements including material procurement, shop surveillance, and technical support during installation.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will support the Southern Company coal boiler fleet and coal boilers converted to natural gas in the southeast United States. This position will perform the following duties:
- Support engineering, operation, maintenance, and field service activities required to inspect and repair coal boilers. This includes performing visual inspections, external and internal, and accurately documenting inspection findings and recommending repairs for correction.
- Provide maintenance planning support for future outages.
- Assist with pressure part replacements including specification development, print reviews, supplier shop inspections, installation, etc.
- Assist with development and coordination of Southern Company initiatives (i.e. SOE, SCTR, etc.).
- Assist with organizing and presenting at various system or plant meetings.
- This position may assist with package boiler purchase, installation and/or inspection activities.
- This position may provide some support for burners (coal and gas) and coal piping projects. For burners and coal piping projects, this will include developing inquiry packages for replacement of this equipment, shop surveillance during fabrication, and installation support.
- This position does require overnight travel primarily within the Southern Company fleet with some nationwide travel on occasion.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering is a plus but not required.
Experience/Knowledge/Skills
- This position requires a working knowledge of the functional characteristics of most major mechanical power plant equipment [i.e., boilers, coal piping, burners, steam turbines, condensers, major pumps, cooling towers, thermal cycle, and circulating water system] to provide effective solutions to equipment problems and maintenance activities.
- Experience with major retrofit projects such as replacing pressure part components for coal boilers is a plus.
- Ability to analyze critical situations and determine competent solutions that can be implemented in a safe and effective manner.
- General ability to utilize computer drawing programs and read engineering drawings.
- Demonstrate the ability to work with diverse teams consisting of vendors, plant personnel, and other TSS personnel to achieve successful project results.
- Ability to successfully interface with pressure part manufacturers and other utility technical support suppliers (EPRI, Suppliers, Metallurgists, etc.) in a professional manner.
- Familiarity with NDE inspection methods (VT, UT, PT, MT, RT)
- Physical ability to climb ladders and crawl in tight spaces, use fall protection while working at heights, respirator use, confined spaces, etc.
- Must be proficient in the use of computer-based applications, i.e. Microsoft Office
