About the role

Description: 

The Senior Director of Principal and Major Gifts reports to the Vice President for Advancement and Chief Development Officer and is responsible for overseeing the Principal, Major Gifts, Annual Giving, and Membership fundraising programs to support the school’s academic and performance programs, scholarship, events, endowment campaign, special projects and general operations in line with priorities and annual fiscal goals. The Senior Director works closely with the President, administrative leadership, Division and Department heads and Board members to develop strategy to engage, solicit, and steward donors and prospects.    

Salary: $225,000 to $250,000 per year

Role Responsibilities:

  • Lead, support, and mentor 6 direct reports: the Associate Director of Major Gifts, 1 Principal Gifts Officer, 1 Major Gifts Officer, the Associate Director of Annual Giving and Membership, the Associate Director of Research and Prospect Management, and the Donor Relations and Scholarship Manager, promoting a culture of collaboration, high achievement, and professional growth.  
  • Establish annual fundraising metrics for gift officers, including expectations for visits, proposals submitted, and total funds raised; conduct regular reviews of staff to ensure that strategic plan objectives and goals are on track; conduct regular moves management meetings with gift officers and campus partners, employing best practices in strategic donor cultivation; focus and prioritize the work of gift officers to match annual fundraising goals; establish and ensure goals for proposal development, solicitation, and funds raised are met; 
  • Provide leadership in the execution of campaign fundraising efforts, working in collaboration with 
  • the Vice President, advancement staff, and senior leaders; prepare and deliver reports on campaign progress toward goals; 
  • Strategically create and implement goals for principal and major gifts annual fundraising for current use, endowment, campaign, and special projects, with a lens towards long-term objectives. 
  • Develop and employ new and innovative strategies for identifying and acquiring prospective donors, increasing donor retention, and upgrading and renewing existing donors. 
  • Working closely with the VP, support the President in his role as chief fundraiser, serving as an advisor in cultivation and solicitation strategies for donors and prospects. Ensure that the President is effectively staffed for fundraising activities and donor conversations, and that his time is optimally, efficiently, and appropriately leveraged. 
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of approximately 100 high-level prospects and donors. 
  • Build collaborative professional relationships with peers across the school and foster a strong team orientation.  
  • Provide staff support to VP for the Development and Trusteeship Committees of the Board. 
  • Develop and lead training on advancement topics; and 
  • Participate in planning for and attending Juilliard events, especially those related to advancement. 
  • Oversee the calendar of specific major gifts special events of various sizes and purposes and establish, measure, communicate, and reevaluate the success of each event through both qualitative and quantitative metrics.
