RESPONSIBILITY AND AUTHORITY

Reporting to SVP of Corporate Development & IT, the VP of Business Development and Strategy is responsible for assessing new and existing markets and analyzing business opportunities that include mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, licensing and partnerships. The VP of Business Development is also responsible for leading the company’s annual strategic planning process. 

Business Development activities include evaluating potential external targets and leading the evaluation, diligence, negotiations, deal structuring and valuation analysis.  He/she will work closely with all the company’s business units and major functions including Finance, Human Resources and Legal.  Candidates will also work closely with the Executive Leadership team and the Board of Directors.

The ideal candidate has a strong background and demonstrated experience in business development either within a medical devices corporation or within a major investment bank specifically covering medical devices. 

PRIMARY ACTIVITIES

  • Oversee all aspects of the business development function, including market and technology assessments, due diligence, external negotiations, and valuation activities.

  • Lead the company’s annual Strategic Planning process including all workshops and presentation material.

  • Consult regularly with physicians, patients, marketing colleagues, internal functional areas, and R&D staff regarding new product development, target markets and new technologies.

  • Conduct a regular review of markets, products, and company entities to identify potential opportunities for new products and new technologies

  • Engage regularly with venture capital, private equity, investment bankers and targeted companies/technologies of interest.  Maintain a presence at major conferences that include the company’s core markets, products and technologies.

  • Work with the Competitive Intelligence & Data Analytics team (CIDA) to conduct market research and market segmentation activities to analyze new market and new product opportunities.

  • Maintain corporate monitoring intelligence for new business development and create quarterly updates for Board of Directors.

  • Collaborates with members of Executive Management to set and monitor performance against quality policies, plans and objectives.

  • Allocates Business Development & Strategy functional resources and appropriately delegates authority to ensure that corporate goals and objectives are attained.

  • Hires, trains and develops personnel. Through these activities, helps foster a culture that plans and takes appropriate action to prevent issues from occurring that can adversely affect product quality or project timelines.

  • Performs other duties as may be required by management.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree; graduate degree preferred

  • 10+ years in medical devices; 5+ years with direct business development responsibilities either in a corporation or in investment banking.

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to keep multiple projects and client engagements active at once.
