Parchment, an Instructure Company is, the market leader in electronic credential exchange, is looking for a creative and energetic, engineer for the role of Senior Software Engineer. The position is primarily focused on our B2B product, the Parchment Exchange, and will directly impact Parchment’s over 7,000 post-secondary and secondary school customers, primarily in the US, but with a presence in over 90 countries.

 

The role will participate in our agile development process to continue the innovations that have produced the SaaS solutions we build. We need someone with the ability to manage multiple priorities, envision the software stack from top to bottom, collaborate with other engineers, QA, and product management, and has experience with scalable high availability systems. Your primary responsibility will be designing and implementing services and service interfaces between the various modules that comprise the Parchment Exchange.

What you will do

 
  • Implement back-end services that provide, store, and transform data as well as support business intelligence operations.

  • Develop user interfaces using React and TypeScript, and utilize GraphQL for efficient data fetching and manipulation.

  • Facilitate integration of SOA infrastructure/services (REST, SOAP, JMS), ESB, and BPM systems into overall operations and support frameworks.

  • Collaborate with development teams to establish and maintain SOA standards and patterns.

  • Create specifications, design documents, code, sample data, and unit tests.

  • Mentor other engineers and provide technical leadership within the team.

  • Work closely with product management and internal teams to define and agree upon system requirements.

  • Manage tasks effectively in Jira as part of the agile development process.

  • Actively participate in agile development activities.

 

What you will need to know and have

 
  • Several years of experience designing scalable, highly available service-oriented software.

  • Familiarity with agile development practices.

  • Experience with Git, Maven, Hibernate, IntelliJ, and continuous integration workflows.

  • (Preferred) Experience using Jira within an agile development environment.

  • Expert knowledge of Java and Java servlet technologies.

  • Advanced understanding and experience with MVC frameworks.

  • Proficiency in SQL and schema design.

  • Experience building dynamic web user interfaces using AJAX, JavaScript, and jQuery.

  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks (especially React) and TypeScript.

  • Experience working with GraphQL.

  • Experience using templating engines/markup languages (such as Freemarker, Velocity, XSLT, Google Closure Templates).

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively within a team.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.

  • Minimum 7–10 years of practical work experience.
