About the role

Your Role 

The Healthcare Quality & Affordability (HQA) Research & Development team sits within Blue Shield of California’s Strategy & Health Solutions organization, which leads health transformation, innovation, provider partnerships, and affordability initiatives. This internship supports an applied research project examining the evidence base for AI-enabled clinical tools, with a primary focus on AI-assisted mammography and breast cancer screening. The intern will work with Blue Shield’s R&D and innovation teams to assess the current state of evidence and identify gaps relevant to payer decision-making.

Your Work 

In this role, you will: 

  • Conduct a structured literature review of peer-reviewed studies, clinical trials, and policy analyses related to AI-supported mammography 
  • Synthesize findings across diagnostic accuracy, patient outcomes, workflow efficiency, and cost implications 
  • Identify areas of strong, mixed, or insufficient evidence
  • Support development of an analytical framework for coverage with evidence 
  • Contribute to a short paper, policy brief, or internal briefing

Your Knowledge and Experience 

  • Requires actively pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree
  • Requires strong research and writing skills
  • Proactive, solution focused mindset with demonstrated creative, problem-solving skills
  • Passionate about changing healthcare and challenging the status quo to advance health equity
  • Interest in AI, digital health, or health policy is a plus

 

Pay:

$25.00 per hour for Undergraduate 

$30.00 per hour for Graduate

Our paid internship program is thoughtfully curated to provide students with experience and exposure to the health professional industry. Our Summer 2026 Internship is June 8th or June 15th through August 14th, 2026.
