About the thesis
The department Power Technology at R&D creates value for Vattenfall and performs the cooperate R&D about electric power systems. It helps Vattenfall realize its strategy. We develop cost effective, safe, and sustainable solutions to improve the infrastructure of Vattenfall assets including Hydro, Wind, Nuclear, Markets, Customer and Solutions, Heat, and Distribution.
Thesis subject / assignment
The Church of Sweden (Svenska Kyrkan) has about 20 000 buildings across Sweden. About 85% of these buildings have potential for future photo voltaic (PV) production which yet has not been identified and explored.
The project will identify the amount of energy from photo voltaic that can be produced in buildings of the Church of Sweden. In the project a few of the dioceses (stift) will be studied and analysed and the buildings with the best potential for PV-production will be identified. The electric energy need and daily consumption pattern for the buildings will also be analysed in order to see how much the buildings can be self-producing of electricity. Also the possibility to combine PV-installations with local energy storages such as batteries will be studied and how that influence the efficiency and the economy of the local energy system.
A tool and procedure of identifying buildings will be developed and described in the project. That will be one of the deliverables from the project. There are public tools available which are believed can be used in the project after some possible modifications.
The project is supported by the environmental goals of the Church of Sweden and with the fossilfree purpose of Vattenfall.
The project is part of the research consortium SOLVE performed together with universities like Dalarna University in Borlänge, Karlstad University, Uppsala University, Mälardalen University and SLU - Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
The assignment is for 1 student.
Qualifications
We are looking for students to join our journey towards a fossil free future. You are soon to be graduated from your academic studies. You also identify yourself with our principles: active, open, positive, and safety.
The project is preferably carried out in collaboration with one of the SOLVE universities (Dalarna University, Karlstad University, Mälardalen University, SLU - Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences or Uppsala University). However, connection to these universities is not mandatory, i.e., the student can come and belong to any other university.
- Education – Any of the following master programs or similar: Electric Power Engineering or System, Energy System, or Data Science
- Scope - 30hp
- Written and spoken English
- Experience with working in MATLAB Simulink
- Experience with C/C# is a merit
