The Opportunity:
The Washington State University (WSU) Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks to fill an 85% FTE continuous career track assistant or associate professor faculty position as an Educator in Simulation-Based Education (SBE). The successful applicant will join a dedicated team of faculty and staff that prioritizes veterinary student success through active learning in a safe environment. Our SBE program is accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and is specifically designed to advance the education of veterinary students and trainees. Instruction in this program involves models, mannequins, task-trainers, trained actors (simulated participants), immersive (total environment) simulation, and technology.
Responsibilities for all Ranks:
This position will contribute significantly to the day-to-day instruction, assessment, and support of learners in the clinical and professional skills curriculum. Content areas include basic surgery skills, anesthesia, diagnostic procedures, client and team communication, imaging, dentistry, biosecurity, triage and resuscitation along with other areas geared to developing new-graduate level competency.
Involvement in the core curricular elements is required and will vary based on time of year and areas of focus. The majority of SBE instruction is in the DVM Year 1 through 3. This position will also provide support to courses and electives who host laboratories in SBE, student club events where indicated, and outreach or continuing education events. Contributions to conceptualizing and validating models, creation of case materials, and enhancement and expansion of instructional modules will be an important, but less intensive area of focus. As SBE is an area of high activity for fundraising and student recruitment, this position will also require participation in and/or oversight for outreach, tours, and student-led laboratories. Core requirements include role modeling behaviors we expect of our learners and actively contributing to SBE team meetings, programming, and staff development.
Educators will be actively engaged with student instruction 60-80% of a typical work week with the remaining time devoted to preparation, skill development, service, and other areas of interest. Instructional design and enhancement will encompass approximately 10% of efforts, as will promotion and outreach. On-going, supported, professional development as an educator is required.
Educators will have responsibility for supervision, training, and support of peer instructors (DVM students who assist in providing instruction during Clinical Skills Laboratory open sessions). Evening and weekend program support is expected on occasion with advanced notice. This time will be off set from work week expectations when possible. Enjoy 8 weeks off during the summer season between June 1 and July 31st .
Area Overview:
The WSU CVM is organized into five departments/schools, including VCS, Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology (VMP), Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience (IPN), the School of Molecular Biosciences (SMB), and the Paul G.
