Wisconsin Clinical Laboratory Network Engagement Specialist

Job Summary:

The Communicable Disease Division (CDD) of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is seeking an Public Health Educator to support and optimize outreach activities for the WCLN (Wisconsin Clinical Laboratory Network). The WCLN is a unique partnership between WSLH and clinical laboratories, and is one of the most longstanding and robust clinical laboratory networks in the country. Formed to facilitate emergency response, the WCLN has grown and expanded to bridge the gap between clinical and public health throughout Wisconsin focusing on effective exchange of clinical and public health information (emergency preparedness, disease surveillance, diagnostics, etc.), communication, and education. The successful candidate will collaborate with the WCLN Outreach Coordinator to lead the Laboratory Technical Advisory Group (LabTAG) of the WCLN, deliver educational and conference content to the WCLN (e.g. presentations, teleconferences and webinars), enhance modes of communication between the WSLH and clinical laboratories in Wisconsin, strengthen relationships between the WCLN and the WSLH-CDD through on-site and virtual visits and other modes, create and deliver messages to laboratory and public health partners, and more. This position is on-site at 2601 Agriculture Dr, Madison, WI 53718. Work hours are 7:45 AM - 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. Occasional after hours, weekend or holiday work may be required in support of urgent or emergent public health needs of the organization. Remote work may be considered at the discretion of the hiring manager after successfully passing a period of probation.

About the Communicable Disease Division - Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene
The WSLH and CDD serve as the State of Wisconsin's laboratory for infectious disease testing, supporting the Wisconsin Division of Health Services through surveillance and outbreak response for any pathogen of public health significance. The CDD is a national and regional reference laboratory for many Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) programs, including but not limited to the detection of and surveillance for influenza, vaccine-preventable diseases, enteric disease pathogens, parasitic diseases, and antimicrobial resistance.

Responsibilities:

Develops and delivers public health informational programs and materials using the tenets of public health to educate the public and other health professionals, promote the health of the population, and advocate for improved health resources and policies.

• 30% Advocates for and disseminates health resources, policies, and safety information with educational materials and programs to appropriate entities to educate the public and health professionals
• 30% Collects and analyzes data by conducting research to improve public health programs and services
• 35% Develops materials, resources, and policies that support healthy behaviors and environments and informs, educates, and empowers the campus and community about environmental health and mental health issues
• 5% Participates in public health committees as needed

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree in bacteriology, microbiology, MLS (Medical Laboratory Science), or related allied health sciences

Qualifications:

Required
-3 years of clinical or public health laboratory experience
-Strong ability to work independently and meet deadlines

Preferred
-MLS(ASCP), MLT (ASCP), or M(ASCP) certification
-Conference or event program management experience
-Strong customer service skills
-Strong verbal and written communication skills
-Strong basic computer skills including Microsoft Access, Excel, Power Point Outlook, and Word
-Experience with a variety of platforms, including but not limited to: virtual meeting/learning apps like Teams, Zoom, etc.; podcasting; polling/survey technology; customer and event database management; social media
-Public health laboratory experience
