GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
The Phlebotomist/Courier under the supervision of the Medical Director, Administrative Director, Manager, and Phlebotomy Supervisor, plans, coordinates and directs the daily activities for all the phlebotomy section of the clinical Laboratory.
The Phlebotomist/Courier is responsible for: collection of specimens from patients, initiates waived and Intermediate level bedside testing; the phlebotomist is also cross-trained to assist the laboratory information data department when possible; is assigned to assist Medical Technologist by setting up and initiating waived and intermediate level testing, will have dual role of couier which will transport and pick up specimens for offiste campuses, specimen processing and filing; implements good public relations by representing the laboratory directly to patients, physicians and hospital staff; must accept suggestions, corrections and adjust to changes in schedules, policy and procedures; Ensure the validity and accuracy of specimen collection / Test results; will help to train new employee and student: collect documentation within the section; Assures quality of work, workflow, turn-around-time; assures accurate testing to support quality patient care; accept suggestions and corrections as adjust to changing situations; Safety precautions and protective attire must be used at all times according to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures; must promote team leadership; must be familiar with performance and interpretation of laboratory procedures associated with pediatric hospital with most patients below the age of 24 years. Responsible for creation and periodic review of Section procedure manual written in accordance with the NCCLS standards; ensure that Corporate and Laboratory Integrity is in compliance with OIG guidelines.
The phlebotomist/ courier performs other duties as assigned and is able to work hours beyond those of normal full time positions to fulfill duties and needs of Driscoll Children's Hospital.

- Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
- Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
- Responsible for specific role during various internal and external CODE and disaster occurrences.
- Responsible for insuring compliance of Infection control techniques within the Laboratory.
- Responsible for insuring compliance of Safety techniques within the Laboratory.
- Responsible for insuring proper security procedures when entering the building and demonstrating appropriate use of ID badge.
- Responsible for insuring proper use of the Pneumatic Tube System.
- Responsible for compliance of IOP/CQI issues.
- Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
- Assures that phlebotomy supplies are restocked for all three shifts.
- Responsible for all clerical duties.
- Performs duties and responsibilities of Certified Phlebotomists.
- Reviews technical work performed in the section at least daily.
- Revises and reviews procedure manuals according to NCCLS guidelines.
- Communicates appropriately with coworkers, hospital personnel, physicians and physician offices.
- Maintains knowledge of new technology and procedures and makes recommendations when appropriate.
- Maintain coverage of the laboratory to provide adequate patient care, which may require “last minute” schedule changes.
- Collects samples from inpatients and outpatients using standard venipuncture or skin puncture techniques according to established policies and procedures.
- Promotes quality and participates in quality improvement programs.
- Inventories, reports and restocks all phlebotomy and bedside testing supplies to ensure continuity of activities.
- Assist in training and orientation of new staff, and students.
- Reports any violation of hospital and laboratory policies and procedures to Administrative Director immediately.
- When working in emergency situation (John Doe), by education, and experience, draws extra blood for further testing based on the observed patient’s condition.
