The Work You Will Do:

The OPS Environmental Specialist II, 37938017, are in the Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration’s Water Quality Monitoring Program, Southwest Regional Operation Center, located in Temple Terrace and will be responsible for water quality sampling in freshwater and estuarine ecosystems as well as ground water wells, and performing biological assessments of streams and lakes. Duties for this position also include records management, calibration of field meters and maintenance of other field equipment. This position enables DEAR/Southwest ROC the capability to accomplish monitoring goals of Strategic Monitoring Plan, Status and Trend Monitoring Networks, as well as respond to public concerns related to water quality of surface waters.

The Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration (DEAR) is charged with protecting, maintaining, and improving the quality of Florida’s springs, rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal waters. DEAR team members provide the department and other resource agencies with the highest quality laboratory services available; provide technical support to the department and the public regarding water quality analysis and data quality assurance (QA); manage water quality data repositories for data storage and use by the department, other agencies and the public; and work together to monitor and assess Florida’s surface water and groundwater quality, develop strategies to reduce pollution, and work closely with local stakeholders to implement comprehensive restoration strategies that improve the lives of all Floridians and preserve aquatic resources for generations to come.

Where You Will Work:

The work location of this position is in Temple Terrace (Hillsborough County), Florida. Temple Terrace is known for its landscape, Hillsborough River views, and majestic trees and is adjacent to the city of Tampa. Tampa is a major city on Florida’s Gulf Coast and is home to a variety of stage and performing arts venues and theaters. The city operates over 165 parks and beaches covering 2,286 acres within city limits; 42 more in surrounding suburbs covering 70,000 acres are maintained by Hillsborough County. Tampa is home to several attractions and theme parks, including Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, Adventure Island, ZooTampa at Lowry Park and the Florida Aquarium. University of South Florida, University of Tampa, and Hillsborough Community College located in the region offer a hub for academic research, art and other student activities.
