ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Irrigation Maintenance Coordinator position within the City of Tucson’s Parks and Recreation Department provides technical and operational guidance and supervision to Groundskeepers, Plumbers, and Trades Specialists staff on irrigation-related tasks and daily workloads. This position is responsible for coordinating preventive and corrective irrigation maintenance, including system inspections, troubleshooting, and minor repairs.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Parks Area Supervisor. This position exercises supervision over Trade Specialists.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises and coaches employees in performing irrigation-focused tasks such as inspecting irrigation infrastructure, conducting system diagnostics, performing routine and preventive maintenance, and completing minor repairs on valves, controllers, heads, and distribution lines. Reviews daily and weekly workloads and assigns tasks related to irrigation system operation, water management, and asset upkeep. Manages workload priorities, resources, and timelines for irrigation projects, including system startups and shutdowns, seasonal adjustments, central control scheduling, response to reported leaks, and coordination of water conservation activities.
  • Participates in recruitment, hiring, and performance evaluations for employees involved in irrigation maintenance and repair. Implements controls for unit staffing and operational effectiveness by ensuring staff are properly trained on irrigation equipment, troubleshooting methods, and safety practices to support optimal system performance. Establishes timelines, monitors progress, and recommends adjustments to improve efficiency. Assists in implementing department policies, projects, and procedures related to irrigation operations, maintenance standards, and water-use compliance throughout the park system.
  • Drives to various park sites to audit irrigation system performance, verify completion of assigned irrigation maintenance tasks, and document findings related to system efficiency, functionality, and staff workmanship. Prepares, writes, reviews, and edits reports on irrigation maintenance activities, water-use monitoring, system repairs, and compliance with irrigation management standards. Ensures adherence to local, state, and federal requirements, as well as departmental water-use policies, by auditing irrigation schedules, monitoring water consumption, documenting leak response, and reporting on irrigation system operating procedures.
  • Contributes to the community and city by ensuring park irrigation systems are well-maintained, efficient, and support safe and healthy landscapes for public use. Engages with teams to implement organizational values and strategies by leading irrigation staff in upholding standards of excellence in water management, system reliability, and resource stewardship. Leads by example in promoting accountability and adherence to organizational values, fostering positive relationships with the community through responsive and effective irrigation system management. Provides customer service by responding to constituent inquiries related to irrigation issues, water usage, and system performance, and addresses concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions

Job sites are located throughout the city, and hours vary Sunday through Saturday from 6:00 am - 8:00 pm.

Indoor and outdoor work with heavy exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, or emotional hazardous environment.

Education
High school diploma or GED

Experience
One (1) year of directly related experience in irrigation
