The Department of Surgery has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Scientist, SOM position. The incumbent carries out a particular research agenda in support of the University’s research goals and objectives. Moreover, the Assistant Scientist, SOM contributes to the scientific community by publishing research findings and promotes the University’s reputation as a leader in the field.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Contributes to basic and applied research activities and authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.
Collaborates with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals.
Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results, needs to have a strong biostatistics background to perform complex statistical analysis.
Enrolls and recruits patients in clinic and completes surveys.
Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.
Writes extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff.
Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff.
Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).
Uses the Internet, surveys, legal documents, and other available sources to collect information.
Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree relevant field
Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM
Department Specific Functions
Data management and preparation for assessment and analyses for our ongoing Miami Breast Cancer Disparities Study, this requires particular expertise in statistics for survey analysis with clinical outcomes, genomic data, mediation analysis, moderation analysis, and survival analysis
In person participant recruitment, enrollment, and survey completion for patients on the Miami Breast Cancer Disparities Study Protocol (approx. 2 days/week)
Intervention development based on data analysis from the Miami Breast Cancer Disparities study
Operationalizing and analyzing bio behavioral stress processes and modifiable adversity and resiliency factors
Submitting grants and publications
Assisting T32 students with statistics and analyzing data for their studies
Department Specific Qualifications
Knowledge of REDCAP and R and/or SPSS statistical language
Knowledge of clinical trial intervention design
Education:
MD, PhD, or PhD in Clinical Psychology
Certification and Licensing:
MD, PhD, or PhD in Clinical Psychology
Experience:
Must have significant experience in statistics capable of analyzing complex clinical, psychological, survey, and outcome data. In addition, must have experience in recruiting and enrolling patients in clinic and conducting surveys. Must also be facile in developing randomized clinical trials and interventions to target disparities in breast cancer outcomes based on our clinical, survey, and outcome data.
