About the role

Each local government independently designs and collects property taxes—the largest revenue source for American local governments—resulting in over 20,000 unique tax systems that create a regulatory maze for institutional real estate operators. We harness innovation and collaboration to tackle these challenges. In this role, you'll play a pivotal part in developing our property tax data and payments products, simplifying a complex system for our customers while working on projects that truly make a difference.

What you'll do

On the tax team, as an engineer, you’ll architect and build scalable systems that power our property tax data and payment solutions. You’ll design robust data pipelines, develop microservices, and integrate with various local government systems to transform complex tax data into streamlined, actionable insights. Collaborating with product managers and data experts, you’ll drive technical innovation that simplifies compliance and enhances our customer experience.

You are expected to:

• Architect and build career-defining ground up complex platforms

• Own and drive all phases of software development including ideation, prototyping, design and production

• Participate and guide the team's technical strategies, vision, decisions and architecture

• Influence the technology and architectural roadmap of the organization

• Play an active role in hiring and mentoring other engineers

What we're looking for

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or related field, or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience

• 5+ years of track record in building and delivering production quality software systems

• Experience with API/data and B2B SaaS products

• Excellent coding and debugging skills

• Depth and breadth in multiple technologies ranging from frontend user interfaces to backend services to databases

• Excellent communication skills, high attention to detail and proven track record of using metrics to drive decisions

• A sense of ownership and a passion for delighting customers through innovation and creative solutions to sophisticated problems

• Data engineering/ETL pipeline experience

• Previous startup experience

• Product minded

• Experience with LLMs and/or automation

Compensation and Benefits

Mainstay’s compensation varies by U.S. geographic market to align with local labor costs. For most locations, the annual pay range for this position is $152,960–$215,100, while the base salary range for roles based in the SF Bay Area, Seattle, and New York City Metro area is $191,000–$239,000. Pay is based on location, skills, and experience, and your recruiter will confirm the specific range for your job location. Please note that remote roles are available in all U.S. states except Hawaii, Alaska, Montana, and U.S. Territories.
