The Hartford’s Middle and Large Commercial (MLC) IT Team is seeking a highly motivated and experienced IT Engineering leader who will be accountable for overseeing The Hartford’s engineering practices and execution for multiple value streams. Reporting to the MLC head of software engineering, this role will champion the technical and cultural shift to digitally enabled software systems & components and oversee critical value stream initiatives. This role will define and evangelize current state challenges, recommend and implement solutions, help drive and execute our engineering roadmap, and provide expert planning, guidance, and oversight to achieve speed to value and quality at scale with the least business disruption. The candidate will be a high-caliber, multi-dimensional technologist with a proven track record of software engineering strategy and execution successes, specifically engaging in agile solutions and design at scale. The ideal candidate will be a passionate people-leader and technologist that has a reputation for delivering great outcomes leveraging cloud technologies who understands how to get things done, navigate difficult conversations, and influence others.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead value stream engineering efforts by coordinating with business partners and other engineering leads.
  • Provide leadership over multiple MLC engineering teams and personnel (including vendors).
  • Provide coaching & people development/career pathing support to managers and engineers across their teams.
  • Manage change control processes, LOB estimates/ financials, define rollout timelines and processes, and drive role clarity.
  • Oversee resource definition, ramp-up, and planning for initiatives.
  • Develop and execute training plans where needed.
  • Contribute to go/no go decisions by defining MVP scope and assessing engineering level maturity.
  • Advocate for cloud, automation, DevSecOps, SRE adoption, shift-left, and other strong software engineering practices and tenets.
  • Set expectations for internal and external teams, communicate LOB status to stakeholders, and adapt plans in changing environments.
  • Provide concise, transparent communications about potential risks, mitigations, and business impacts in a timely manner.
  • Understand and advocate for technology trade-offs (risks and rewards) for the best customer outcome.
  • Own and drive applicable innovation initiatives
  • Leverage multiple technologies to solve the customer problem; recommend and drive conversations around new technology and define "safe to try" experiments to test and learn.
  • Anticipate business needs and influence strategy, architecture and platform decisions.
  • Articulate and evangelize technology solutions with senior leaders and influence decisions.

Qualification:

  • 10+ years of experience in application software solution development along with managing software engineering teams.
  • 5+ years proven experience in leading major engineering projects
  • 5+ years in hands-on software engineering, enterprise software development, and operational management
  • 5+ years in leadership roles with a focus on people development (coaching, mentoring, direct management)
  • Strategic planning, process analysis and execution skills for introducing evolving architecture-based solutions like cloud, SaaS, and new UI frameworks.
  • Working knowledge and experience working within Agile framework, and with Agile Teams (i.e. Scrum, Kanban)
