Senior Attorney – Retail/Branch Support

** This is a hybrid position requiring in-office work three days every week and is based in Buffalo, NY.
Overview:
Provide analysis and counsel on legal issues for the Retail/Branch Network. The Senior Attorney assists with mitigating legal risks facing M&T, resolves customer issues, and researches a variety of complex legal issues.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Review escalated questions from the branches regarding customer account opening, maintenance and termination.
- Review documents and provide legal guidance on customer matters in the following areas: power of attorneys, trusts, guardianships, estates, decedent processing, etc.
- Make recommendations on customer matters as well as branch procedures.
- Review existing branch processes and procedures, and recommend enhancements based on risk reviews and changes in law.
- Represent Bank in pre-litigation matters, including check claims/disputes.
- Participate and occasionally lead in the development of departmental policies.
- Proactively provide legal advice within area of expertise and answer complex legal questions.
- Review and provide feedback on customer complaint responses.
- Adhere to applicable compliance/operational risk controls in accordance with Company or regulatory standards and policies.

- Complete other related duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for providing strategic analysis and counsel on complex legal issues for the Retail/Branch Network. Incumbent should be able to anticipate and guard against legal risks facing M&T, develop and recommend corporate policy and positions on legal issues and conduct and coordinate research into a variety of legal issues. This position requires interaction with mid-level management on an occasional basis.

Education and Experience Required:
- J.D. from an accredited law school.
- At least two years previous experience as an attorney or other relevant experience.
- New York State or applicable state bar admission.
- Ability to identify legal issues, evaluate legal risks, and offer solutions.
- Strong negotiation, interpersonal, organizational skills.
- Excellent writing, analytical and verbal skills.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
Education and Experience Preferred:
- Universal Commercial Code (U.C.C.) and/or Deposits law background.
