The Shared Resources Technician, Comparative Medicine - Preclinical Modeling (CM-PCM) is responsible for supporting the Comparative Medicine Preclinical Modeling needs of researchers and the CM-PCM Specialists at Fred Hutch. The SR Technician will assist the CM-PCM team in the development of preclinical rodent models of disease.  This position will be expected to perform basic tasks such as rodent handling, breeding colony maintenance, and genotyping to support the CM-PCM team in transgenic rodent technologies and other models such as patient derived xenografts.   This is an entry level position within the resource with substantial room for growth.   ​​

Responsibilities

PRIMARY/ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Research Support:
    • Following SOPs, perform essential tasks in the development of preclinical mouse models such as tasks related to mouse husbandry and colony management such as setting up breeding pairs, managing breeding rotations and setting up timed pregnancies. 
    • Learn and perform in vivo technical procedures such as injections and other substance administration procedures, health observations, and other biological data collections.
    • Additional research support tasks include managing care for surgical mouse models, including post-operative checks, animal preparation, and anesthesia and monitoring.
    • Opportunity to learn additional technical skills as new projects are developed.
    • Use of Microsoft Office products, mobile devices, and databases to support these projects.
  • ​​Equipment Oversight:
    • Coordinate and complete maintenance on basic equipment used in preclinical modeling core such as microscopes and surgical supplies. 
    • Assist in supply management and preparation. 
  • ​Training and Education:
    • Understand team SOPs and training materials and guidelines for investigator use.
  • ​Administrative tasks:
    • Accurate documentation of laboratory activities and mouse colony records.
  • ​Regulatory and Compliance: 
    • Assure that all work done is in accordance with an IACUC approved protocol. ​
  • Other duties as assigned.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Level of autonomy:
    • Under direct supervision of the SR Core Manager with daily or weekly check ins with SR Core Specialists/Manager/Director(s).
    • This position has no responsibility for supervision of others.
    • There is high oversight and training from the resource director and senior staff.
  • Financial responsibility: None

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree in area of science, engineering or related field or certification such ALAT or higher showing competency and understanding with basic rodent procedures.
