Purpose/Description
The Equipment Repair Specialist 1 performs a wide variety of mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, heavy equipment, heavy trucks, pumps and compressors. Master mechanics repair virtually any system on the vehicle or equipment.
Required Tasks
- Repair equipment (shop specific).
- Diagnose equipment.
- Place parts orders.
- Maintain work area.
- Maintain certifications.
- Test drive vehicles.
- Test components and systems using equipment such as engine analyzers, compression gauges and computerized diagnostic devices.
- Examine vehicles to determine extent of damage or malfunctions.
- Follow checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings and other potentially troublesome areas.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Educational/Experience Requirements
- A high school diploma or it's equivalent; AND
- Certification in five (5) Automobile or Heavy Truck Mechanic licensing areas; AND
- Valid Driver’s License;
NOTE: A Physical Agility/Performance Assessment may be administered to Qualified candidates.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Appointees within five (5) months of service must become certified as a Master Mechanic (State of Michigan and/or A.S.E. only). If the certification is not obtained, the employee will be removed from the Equipment Repair Specialist position pursuant to the Department of Personnel/Human Resources and Department of Public Services procedures. Persons employed in this position must maintain Master Mechanic certification for the duration of their employment.
