Position Overview
United Health Services (UHS) is seeking a skilled Therapies Authorization and Benefits Specialist to support patients by coordinating insurance benefits and authorizations for physical, occupational, and speech therapy services. In this role, you will verify insurance coverage, obtain required pre-authorizations, and communicate directly with providers and insurance companies to ensure timely access to care.Success in this position requires strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to navigate complex payer requirements. Job Responsibilities
- Demonstrate proficiency with the UHS scheduling system to efficiently coordinate therapy appointments and related services
- Manage the insurance authorization process by utilizing knowledge of health plan resources and contacts to facilitate timely patient care
- Respond promptly to patient phone calls, providing clear communication and counseling regarding insurance benefits and authorization requirements
- Complete all necessary authorization forms—both paper and electronic—with accurate and complete information including diagnosis codes, procedure codes, signatures, specialist details, and medical documentation
- Accurately document all communications with insurance companies, patients, and other entities within the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system
- Prioritize authorization requests to ensure urgent cases are expedited, responding promptly to meet deadlines and patient needs
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards such as Joint Commission, NYS Department of Health, Infection Control, and other applicable policies throughout the authorization process
- Participate actively in Performance Improvement initiatives to enhance departmental efficiency and patient service quality
- Perform medical secretary duties as assigned, supporting administrative functions within the therapy department
- Collaborate with insurance carriers to obtain preauthorizations for therapy services, acting as a patient advocate when necessary to resolve authorization issues or disputes
- Work closely with the Therapy Denials team to assist in the reconsideration process when authorizations have been denied, providing necessary documentation and follow-up
- Assist in the orientation and training of new staff members regarding insurance authorization procedures and benefit verification processes, and attend relevant team meetings to stay informed and aligned
Position Qualifications
Education and Experience
Minimum Required:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Two (2) years’ experience working in healthcare OR two (2) years’ experience working in customer service
- Proficient PC Skills
Preferred:
- Basic knowledge of Medical Terminology
- Basic knowledge of insurance approval process related to outpatient therapies
- Prior experience in clerical work
