The Senior Packaging Project Engineer manages the labeling and packaging process engineering projects including definition, project planning, landmark scheduling, delivery, and administration of project team activities. Possesses strong engineering and project management skills with expertise in medical device packaging technology and process development. Works with management and staff level personnel in procurement, engineering, manufacturing, R&D, and quality to ensure the timely introduction of packaging and labeling projects within Global Operations. Leads well defined projects under general strategic direction. Reports to Director, Global Packaging Technology.

What will you be doing?

  • Leads sophisticated packaging transformational projects using design transfer methodology across multiple manufacturing sites.
  • Facilitates multi-functional and internal departmental project resource activities and track project work to plan.
  • Collaborate with inter-departmental, manufacturing site, and executive leadership in areas of project development, workshops, activity and timeline updates, resource planning, change control, and issues as needed.
  • Follows standard methodologies for packaging functions globally to establish approach and ensure packaging quality and compliance. Ensures consistent approach to packaging processes and procedures, equipment specifications, verifications, and validations.
  • Identifies improvements and leads global packaging initiatives in the areas of innovative technologies, packaging flow improvements, transfers, labor/material cost reductions, end-to-end conversion improvements, VA/VE initiatives, special projects related to labeling, and digital technologies to be used by Global Operations.
  • Requires comprehensive understanding of concepts and principles related to packaging engineering and manufacturing. Maintains a solid understanding of packaging methods and industry trends. Ability to apply in-depth understanding of how packaging integrates with other functions within Smith & Nephew global operations.
  • Identifies and resolves sophisticated technical, operational, and organizational problems related to packaging.

What will you need to be successful?

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology. Master’s Degree Preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years in an operations role related to the manufacture, design, and/or development of medical devices or healthcare product packaging; or a related field.
  • Proven ability to lead and direct others to the successful completions of projects.
  • Strong organization, communication, and people skills.
  • Self-directed, with the ability to respond to the challenge of resolving day-to-day problems.
  • Provide long-term solutions through strategic planning.
  • Good technical writing.
  • Spanish is a plus.
