Position Title: Manager, External Relations
Position Classification: Regular, Exempt, Full-time, 40 Hours/week
Reports to: Sr. Director, External Relations
Location: Employees in this role can work from our Boston, MA office, remotely within the U.S. or a hybrid of these two options. (Up to 10% percent domestic and/or international travel required.)

Position Overview
The External Relations Manager leads Partners In Health's (PIH) organizational messaging infrastructure, with primary responsibility for "The Library"—PIH's internal system for developing, organizing, and sharing strategic messaging across the organization. This role ensures that colleagues worldwide can create and access accurate, compelling, and mission-aligned messaging to communicate PIH's vision, values, and work. The ideal candidate will have a background in knowledge management, organizational change initiatives, and strategic messaging, as well as knowledge of global health.
Responsibilities
System Leadership (45%)
- Lead the development, maintenance, and optimization of The Library.
- Ensure The Library is regularly updated and easily accessible to all stakeholders.
- Monitor the effectiveness of The Library and make data-driven improvements, as needed, to ensure The Library software and systems follow best practices and keep pace with technical innovations.
- Work across teams to support the integration of The Library with other knowledge-management and information systems internal to PIH.
- Develop standards and protocols for the management and governance of The Library.
Messaging Development (35%)
- Oversee the creation and approval of talking points to ensure messaging to external audiences is accurate, impactful, and aligned with PIH's data and brand and style guides.
- Solicit and edit messaging from internal subject matter experts. Develop and adapt messaging for various audiences (including donors, partners, and advocates) and motivations, based on feedback from colleagues to improve messaging’s effectiveness.
- Collaborate across the organization to gather and produce relevant information, data, and insights for effective messaging.
- Serve as an External Relations representative during crises, such as natural disasters, to update and draft relevant talking points.
Stakeholder Training and Support (20%)
- Provide guidance and training on effective use of approved messaging including spokesperson preparation.
- Provide training on how to draft effective messaging.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Global Health, Public Health, or a related field.
- Five years of experience in communications or external relations, preferably within the global health or nonprofit sector.
- Proven experience in knowledge management.
- Proven experience in developing strategic messaging.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail.
