The University of Virginia School of Law seeks an Assistant Director of Budget and Accounting. This is a University Managerial and Professional Staff position reporting to the Senior Assistant Dean for Business and Finance. The Assistant Director of Budget and Accounting will facilitate the budget and accounting functions of the Law School, ensuring compliance with accounting policies and procedures, and preparing financial analyses and reports to support senior management. The Assistant Director will develop the annual budget, monitor budget performance, prepare financial statements and reports, and provide guidance and training to departmental budget managers. Additionally, the Assistant Director/Director will be responsible for managing the Law School’s chart of accounts, including ensuring that fund accounting principles are applied.

Specific duties of this position include:

  • Develop and implement the annual budget, including the preparation of budget guidelines and instructions, and the coordination of budget submissions from departmental managers.

  • Monitor budget performance throughout the year, identify variances and trends, and provide recommendations for corrective actions as necessary.

  • Prepare and distribute monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports, including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, and variance analysis reports.

  • Facilitate the day-to-day accounting functions of the Law School, including accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, and bank reconciliations.

  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies and procedures and keep up-to-date with changes in accounting standards and regulations.

  • Manage and maintain the Law School’s chart of accounts, ensuring that fund accounting principles are applied.

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including senior management, auditors, and vendors.

  • Collaborate with the Senior Assistant Dean on strategic financial planning, forecasting, and analysis, and provide input and recommendations on financial policies and procedures.

  • Support annual audit process by providing necessary documentation to external auditors.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

  • At least 5 years of experience in budgeting and accounting, preferably in a higher education setting.

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and procedures, and experience with financial statement preparation and analysis.

  • Experience with budgeting software and financial reporting tools.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and analyze trends and variances in financial data.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams, and to develop and implement effective accounting policies and procedures. 

  • Experience managing a chart of accounts, and knowledge of fund accounting principles.

This position requires most work to be performed in person at the Law School, with the opportunity to perform a limited amount of work remotely in accordance with Law School policy.
