About the role

Meta is seeking a Mechanical Engineer experienced in the design and operations of critical facilities to become part of our Design Engineering and Construction team. Our data centers are the foundation upon which our software operates with efficient ease. Building and operating data centers the "right" way from the day they go live is synonymous with ensuring capacity availability and capital conservatism. The Meta Data Center Engineering team endeavors to be the benchmark of innovation for the data center industry and improve reliability, safety, and efficiency through innovative solutions, enabling Infrastructure teams to excel in achieving their goals. This position is full-time.Mechanical Engineer - DEC, Engineering Responsibilities
  • Research, design and develop new data center cooling technologies / systems to reduce cost, improve reliability, efficiency, and speed to market. Contribute to development of data center cooling strategy and roadmap.
  • Initiate and lead cooling R&D projects comprising proof of concept studies, prototyping and pilot deployments to evaluate the technical benefits and feasibility of various cooling technologies/solutions for broader deployment within data center environment.
  • Lead and implement technical scope of all phases of R&D life cycle of cooling solutions/technologies - design requirements and risks, design development, verification/validation testing in controlled environments (e.g. vendor labs and data centers), conduct design reviews and seek approvals, technical documentation, patents and publications.
  • Lead and/or assist on new data center product designs, integrating new technological advancements and requirements while balancing business priorities around cost, efficiency, time to delivery and sustainability.
  • Responsible for data center product mechanical systems strategies and infrastructure designs and specifications as well as follow-up support of new product delivery.
  • Work closely with CSLA, Electrical, Connectivity & Controls Engineering teams to achieve holistic new product design that is optimized for cost, construction speed, operational efficiency, and long-term fungibility/flexibility.
  • Drive required cross-functional collaboration with other Meta teams including Design, Sourcing, Hardware Engineering, Network Engineering, Automations and Controls, Construction, and Facilities Operations.
  • Develop strong research collaborations with data center peers, vendors, academia, and government organizations to remain current on industry trends while influencing technology development.
  • Evaluate new cooling system technologies and collaborate with cross functional teams to transform those innovations to manufactured equipment.
  • Travel to vendor/design partner locations and Meta’s data center sites for verification/validation testing of cooling products/technologies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum ten (10) years of hands-on R&D experience in mission critical mechanical (e.g. cooling) components and systems including concept formulation, detailed design, modeling/simulation, prototyping, verification/validation testing and installation/commissioning for sustained operations
  • Cross-disciplinary design, development and operations knowledge of data center or similar mission critical industry heat absorption and heat rejection systems: server/rack/row level heat absorption (e.g. liquid cooling, air cooling using heat exchangers), building/campus level heat rejection (e.g. chillers, open cooling towers), facility & technical water distribution architecture, associated automations & controls systems
  • Experience and expertise in mechanical modeling/simulation/analysis/design methodologies/tools - thermal and structural modeling and simulation of cooling systems (e.g. CFD, FEA)
  • Proven analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Effective presentation and communication to peers, stakeholders and leadership
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering - MS, PhD
  • Professional Engineer registration
  • Experience in mechanical (cooling) systems reliability modeling, statistical analyses, or data science techniques
  • Experience in cost estimating methodologies to establish business cases for R&D projects - e.g. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), ROI, etc.
  • Working knowledge of design, development, and manufacturing processes as applied to adjacent data center systems and solutions
  • Experience in applying systems engineering elements/methods to R&D projects
  • Design and operation experience with large and complex data centers, including campus systems
  • Working knowledge of relevant domestic and international standards, building codes and safety regulations for cooling systems including NEC, ASHRAE, NETA, ANSI,
