Associate Director, Training (CAPS)

Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) seeks an Associate Director, Training to join Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS). CAPS provides a range of mental health services to help RISD students improve emotional, interpersonal, and academic functioning.

The Associate Director of Training, CAPS provides input and makes recommendations for the effective and efficient administrative, clinical, consultative, and outreach functions of CAPS. This role provides consultation and oversight on sensitive, challenging, and more acute clinical cases, in consultation with the Director.

The position provides urgent clinical services during regular hours of operation.

The Associate Director attends administrative meetings, participates in relevant committees, and provides input and recommendations to enhance the general operational flow of clinical services. The role provides on call coverage, crisis intervention, psycho-educational programming, community liaison and referrals, data collection, assessment and evaluation, and reports as needed. The position serves as the Administrator-in-Charge when the Director and/or the Associate Director of Clinical Care is absent or unavailable.

The Associate Director is responsible for responding to the mental health needs of RISD students. Under minimal guidance from the Director, this position is responsible for the clinical training for practicum students and interns from a variety of academic programs. This position provides a full range of culturally informed clinical and administrative services to support the psychological health of a culturally diverse and creative student body at RISD. The Associate Director delivers consultation and training to faculty and staff in the RISD community.

Essential Functions:

• Oversee the selection, training, and evaluation of clinical trainees in accordance with program guidelines. Manage policy development and implementation; maintaining affiliations with various clinical training programs; and mentoring and guiding RISD’s clinical staff in their roles as trainee supervisors. Develop the schedule for in-service, case conference, and other meetings relevant to the training program. 

• Maintains the trainings, orientation schedules, and presentation materials for CAPS. This includes the trainings and orientation requests by campus partners.

• Plans for and oversees the clinical aspects of the Pre-College Program including training and orientation of Pre-College Counseling staff.

• Provide culturally informed clinical services to all RISD students. This includes, but is not limited to: intake evaluations, short- and long-term individual therapy, and same-day/urgent appointments.

• Coordinates the onboarding and internal training of new staff as well as ongoing staff orientation and collaboration with campus partners.

• Serve in the CAPS on-call rotation for the college to provide direction on responding to student crises and offering time sensitive consultation.

• As a member of the Counseling Center Administrative Team, provides daily clinical consultation to staff.

• Supervises front desk administrative position, including the coordination of response to ProtoCall reports.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience

• A Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) or a master’s degree in counseling (or related field) with at least 7 years of experience post-licensure in mental health settings; or a doctorate in counseling, clinical, or psychology from an APA-accredited program with at least 2 years of experience post-licensure in mental health settings.

• At least 3-5 years of clinical supervisory experience required.

• Must be licensed or license-eligible as an LICSW, LMHC, or Psychologist in Rhode Island (i.e. must file for licensure in Rhode Island immediately upon hire and obtain license in accordance with RI State Board of Health prevailing standards and schedules).

• Demonstrated experience in program development and evaluation.
