JOB TITLE:  

Engineering Student Internship 

JOB PURPOSE:   

The Engineering Student Internship provides students with practical, hands-on experience in an engineering office, supporting the planning, design, and execution of construction and remodeling projects. This part-time, non-benefited position offers flexible hours during the spring and fall semesters (minimum 10 hours per week) and full-time opportunities during the summer. Interns will gain exposure to project coordination, budget management, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, preparing them for future careers in engineering and construction management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assist in the coordination and management of construction and remodeling projects from initial estimate through project completion.
  • Support project management within designated budgets, typically ranging from $500 to $50,000, and obtain authorization for any budget adjustments.
  • Collaborate with Facilities Construction and Utilities Management teams to ensure projects are executed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with university standards.
  • Maintain project documentation, including drawings, specifications, schedules, and status reports.
  • Conduct site visits as needed to verify construction progress and document existing conditions.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, campus stakeholders, and team members to resolve project issues.
  • Utilize software tools such as AutoCAD or Revit to create or update project drawings and models.
  • Assist with technical research, reporting, and preparation of project-related materials.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Assist professional engineers and project managers in preparing estimates, design documents, bid packages, and project specifications.
  • Conduct field investigations, collect data, and document existing conditions to support design and construction efforts.
  • Perform site inspections during construction to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and safety standards.
  • Update project records, drawings, and as-built documentation in coordination with Facilities Engineering, Utilities Management, and Facilities Construction teams.
  • Participate in internal project meetings and contribute to discussions related to design solutions, scheduling, and cost management.
  • Collaborate with architects, contractors, and utilities staff to coordinate project activities and resolve field challenges.
  • Research materials, equipment, and sustainable design practices applicable to university projects.
  • Provide general administrative and technical support to Facilities Engineering staff as needed.
