DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Director of Safety and Security, the Assistant Director supports all functions associated with the Office of Safety and Security and acts for the Director in his/her absence. The Assistant Director supports planning, coordination, and execution of district-wide safety and emergency operations and assists the Director in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives.

This role is responsible for overseeing field operations, supervising safety personnel, and ensuring consistent implementation of safety protocols, emergency preparedness, and staff training programs. The Assistant Director leads incident response efforts, manages departmental functions and staff performance, and collaborates with internal and external partners to maintain a safe and supportive environment for students, staff, and the community. The role emphasizes accountability, proactive prevention, and continuous improvement aligned with legal standards, best practices, and HCPSS’s Equity Framework.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Education:

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution.

Experience:

  • Ten years of experience in school security in a PreK-12 or college/university setting, public safety work, or emergency management to include at least three years of supervisory experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, homeland security, emergency management/public safety, education, public administration, or a related field.

  • MPCTC (Maryland Police Correction Training Commission) Certified Instructor or certification in other Train the Trainer courses relevant to school safety and security or student well-being.

  • Five years of experience in school security in a PreK-12 setting,

  • Five years of supervisory experience in a large-scale organization with ten or more direct reports.

  • Three years of experience designing and providing security training to school-based staff.

  • Experience developing and implementing security policies and procedures.

  • Experience in strategic and contingency planning.
