Overview
Under the direct supervision of an HVAC Technician, the HVAC Apprentice assists in the troubleshooting, calibration, repair, and installation of commercial and residential heating, ventilation, and air conditioning or refrigeration equipment.
Essential Functions
1 Assists HVAC Technician in the mechanical labor, repair, and maintenance work for City HVAC equipment and related systems; performs mechanical, technical, and general manual labor to ensure safe and comfortable environment for City buildings and structures.
2 Assists HVAC Technician in the troubleshooting, evaluation and checks of electrical components and pneumatic controls on HVAC refrigeration equipment to assist experienced mechanics in making repairs; identifies concerns, determines repair, and ensures quality work completion.
3 Assists HVAC Technician in performing routine preventive maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration equipment to maintain service level in city buildings; checks drain lines, clears pipes, and makes necessary repairs; recovers refrigerant in compliance with federal regulations.
4 Assists HVAC Technician with the installation and repairs small electric motors used in forced air systems; installs and repairs drinking fountains, refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, etc.; provides mechanical help and insight to address malfunctioning components.
5 Maintains records of work orders, material requests, time sheets, etc. to document work progress; monitors supplies and equipment, makes purchases, and works with various individuals to determine needs.
6 Learn to compile a complete materials list from blueprints or site visit.
7 Learns how to install and maintain fan coil units, air handling units including filter changes, periodic lubrication, bearing change out and drive belt replacement.
8 Learn how to install exhaust fans and associated controls, hot water, chilled water, and domestic water circulating pumps; rebuilds pumps as required.
9 Learn how to install and maintain direct expansion, roof top package units with hot water, electric or gas heating, chillers, and associated control devices.
10 Learn layout, design, and install low voltage wiring.
11 Learn the basics of gas and refrigerant piping installation.
12 Learn to ensure HVAC systems remain compliant with industry-standards and regulations.
13 Learn to troubleshoot equipment after startup; make changes or adjustments as needed.
14 Learn to work with HVAC technicians and vendors on pricing, scope, and changes on installs.
15 Communicate clearly about the projects and department operations to customers and coworkers, while providing the highest level of customer service possible.
16 Learn to coordinate and remain current on all local utility programs.
17 Maintain professional appearance and attitude at all times.
18 Complete clear and concise paperwork as needed.
19 Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
1 Basic knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, equipment, and repair tools.
2 Ability to operate hand and portable power tools used in the installation and repair of HVAC systems.
3 Ability to read, write, and comprehend basic technical descriptions and plans.
4 Basic knowledge of electrical and mechanical codes related to HVAC installation and repair
5 Basic sheet metal practices
6 Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
7 Establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in HVAC operations and repairs.
