What You’ll Do

Samsung develops impactful products and seeds new industries because we research and develop new technologies that improve user’s experience by making computing more powerful.

As the Strategy and Open Innovation Manager, you will be responsible for contributions to overall strategy and competitive intelligence in: (1) semiconductor and computing technologies, (2) the future of computing, and (3) other emerging technologies on an as-needed basis. 

You will be expected to perform as the subject matter expert in a variety of semiconductor-related technical topics for SAIT’s North America team to develop recommendations for research collaborations and R&D strategy.  Key technical areas could include a combination of semiconductor materials, logic devices, memory devices, ASICs, computer architecture, and semiconductor process technologies.  You will be responsible for following technology trends in academia and industry in North America, and reporting regularly on how these may be relevant to Samsung.  You will build, cultivate, and sustain relationships within the semiconductor ecosystems with universities and other stakeholders to enhance open innovation at Samsung.  In this role, you will work with Samsung executives and researchers to combine external technical signals and trends with internal needs to inform technology strategy.

Location: Hybrid, working onsite at our San Jose, CA headquarters 3 days a week, with the flexibility to work remotely the remainder of your time the remainder of your time.

  • Regularly technology “sensing” activities: closely follow technical developments and trends happening in academia, startups, and industry.
  • Prepare regular reports for the relevant technical labs in Samsung to inform project direction and to support strategy development.
  • Identify gaps and competitive threats; stay up-to-date on latest research, understand macro/micro market trends and competitive threats to provide insightful strategic recommendations in semiconductor technologies, computing, and other high tech fields.
  • Work with technical leaders to communicate the key trends and development in semiconductor devices, systems and/or architectures.
  • Work to create new open innovation approaches that better allow Samsung to leverage external resources toward solving internal challenges.
  • Be the authority on parts of the semiconductor and computing landscape in North America and use that knowledge to identify new technologies and elucidate how they may impact Samsung’s future competitiveness.
  • Be a consultant to our internal research groups to help them better understand applications, use-cases, and commercialization potential of their R&D.
  • Be willing to explorer and navigate new technical areas as business needs arise to provide strategic insights that may shape future R&D strategy.
  • Develop and steward relationships in the academic community for the purposes of university relations, research collaboration identification/support, and technology sensing.

What You Bring

  • BS in Computer/Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Computer Science, and 10 years of relevant experience and deep technical expertise in semiconductor technology, devices, systems and/or architectures or a MS in Computer/Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Computer Science with 8 years of relevant experience or a PhD with 5 years of experience preferred.
  • 2+ years proven experience in high-tech or electronics industry with significant strategy experience (desirable).
  • Strong professional network in academia and industries is desirable.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify opportunities towards improving the future of computing.
  • Experience interacting with researchers from academia, and preferably experience in some form of university relations activity.
