Typical Responsibilities: Responsible for the administration of programs, policies & procedures for a functional area within a division or department. Responsible for the development and direction of new programs within the department. Assist in the development and implementation of strategies and objectives to ensure departmental goals are met. Develop, implement, monitor and report on key organizational and program performance indicators. Design and deliver presentations, workshops and educational/training materials. Train and supervise work of staff, students and volunteers as assigned. May represent the Director in his/her absence. During declared campus emergencies, this position may be required to perform specific job related duties at a designated off campus location or place of residence.
Required Qualifications: This position requires either (a) Master’s degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and two years of experience directly related to the job functions; (b) Bachelor’s degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and four years of experience directly related to the job functions; or (c ) 8 years of direct experience.
The Assistant Director of Residence Life provides vision and direction for the residential students at the University of North Florida. Under the direction of the Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life, the Assistant Director assists in the design, development, and implementation of departmental processes and/or programs. The Assistant Director recommends policies and procedures to ensure effective coordination of departmental programs.
The Assistant Director of Residence Life is responsible for the direction and leadership in the daily operations of several residential communities. The Assistant Director serves as the primary supervisor for all first-year residential areas or returning student residential areas. Their primary responsibility is the management of other managers, supervisors, and support staff.
Supervision
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Residence Life staff (at all levels but particularly 3-5 full-time Residence Life Coordinators and potentially supervise graduate student Assistant Residence Life Coordinators)
- Guide Residence Life Coordinators on fostering and enhancing community development within their individual communities
- Supervise Residence Life Coordinator summer job assignments and projects (e.g., orientation housing, conferences, project development)
- Assist in the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of student staff, comprised of 100+ staff members
Functional Supervision and Project Management
- Chair and/or advise department committees and taskforces
- Assist with the oversight of the Residence Life budget
- Assist with residence hall openings and closings
- Leads/Co-Leads the weekly Residence Life team meeting and attends other meetings as scheduled
- Design, deliver, and assess presentations, workshops, and educational/training materials
Conduct, Care, and Crisis Response
- Enhance the quality of life on campus and strive to provide a safe residential community by holding students accountable for their actions and treating students with consistency, fairness, and compassion utilizing a case management model
- Coordinate follow-up for critical incidents and crisis events in residential areas
- Support the Department of Housing and Residence Life staff and residential areas during critical and crisis events (including, but not limited to: pandemics, hurricanes, student deaths)
- Respond to student and family/visitor/guest concerns and make appropriate referrals to campus and community resources
- Responds to crisis situations while also serving as a guide for Residence Life staff in an on-call capacity
- Participates in the department’s and University’s conduct processes by reviewing incident reports and, as needed, police reports, on a daily basis
- Provides direct and clear guidance, on a daily basis, to Residence Life Coordinators and student staff with regard to proper protocol in escalating issues/incidents associated with Title IX and Clery Act compliance
- Serve as a senior department representative and division and university settings, as applicable
- Collaboration and communication with other campus departments (e.g., Dean of Students, EOI, Student Conduct)
- Mediate conflicts as well as advises and counsels residents, parents, and staff
