Staff Engineering Analyst, Motion Planning and Controls
Cruise LLCAbout the role
We're Cruise, a self-driving service designed for the cities we love.
We’re building the world’s most advanced self-driving vehicles to safely connect people to the places, things, and experiences they care about. We believe self-driving vehicles will help save lives, reshape cities, give back time in transit, and restore freedom of movement for many.
In our cars, you’re free to be yourself. It’s the same here at Cruise. We’re creating a culture that values the experiences and contributions of all of the unique individuals who collectively make up Cruise, so that every employee can do their best work.
Cruise is committed to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment, both in our workplace and in our products. If you are looking to play a part in making a positive impact in the world by advancing the revolutionary work of self-driving cars, come join us. Even if you might not meet every requirement, we strongly encourage you to apply. You might just be the right candidate for us.
The MP&C Analysis team helps drive our AVs with data. We close the feedback loop on software development and help drive critical prioritization decisions. In this team, you will have the opportunity to address some of the most pressing challenges in how we evaluate safety, integrity and performance of the autonomous vehicle software. You will collaborate closely with teams across Cruise in Planning, Controls, Systems Engineering, Testing, Prediction and Perception to bridge the gaps in our understanding of how small changes in software cascade into large behavioral improvements.
As a Staff Engineering Analyst, you will develop new metrics and evaluation roadmaps to provide insights on the inner workings of our motion planning and controls stack. Your work will be key in evaluating state-of-the art algorithms and helping push the boundaries by developing new ones. You will lead cross-collaborative analysis efforts investigating risk and impact of technical approaches, communicate your findings, and work with EMs and other Staff Engineers to drive decision making.
What you’ll be doing:
Lead new strategies and methods to identify risk and impact of motion planning and controls features
Build, deploy and maintain new metrics to measure performance of the motion planning and controls stack
Champion metrics and observability in planning and control roadmaps
Provide technical leadership and mentorship to the team
Develop processes and tools to enable collaborators to make better data-driven decisions
Translate data and analysis into impactful recommendations
Build and manage relationships with key partners across Cruise
What you must have:
BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or another related field
5+ years of experience working with planning and controls algorithms, engineering analysis, statistical analysis or other related disciplines
Experience working with large datasets and processing pipelines
Strong coding skills in Python and C++
Proven track record of implementing data-driven solutions for complex technical systems
Ability to adapt to change and operate in a self-directed environment
Ability to clearly define and motivate problems and solutions in technical writing.
Bonus points!
Experience as an engineering analyst or software engineering working on autonomous vehicle planning and controls
Experience with robotics, autonomous vehicles, model predictive control algorithms or numerical methods
Ability to identify and act on opportunities to improve processes and increase efficiency
Experience with working on robotics platforms based on ROS
