JOB TITLE:   

Technician, Master- Engineering & Physical Sciences

JOB PURPOSE:

Manufacture and commission complex parts and assemblies required for the successful completion of water treatment research activities in the Department of Civil & Architectural Engineering & Construction Management in College of Engineering and Applied Science.  Assist with the management of associated research laboratory spaces and coordination of research supply logistics.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interpret conventional drawings and solid models to Create CNC machine code using Mastercam or similar application. Manufacture complex parts on CNC or conventional machines as necessary based on models and drawings developed by you and/or students. Manufacture parts made of a wide variety of materials including but not limited to steel, aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, acrylic, polycarbonate, acetyl, Teflon, and wood.
  • Weld or otherwise assemble/construct components as necessary to construct functional research equipment. 
  • Assist students with the assembly of research equipment components. 
  • Using relevant computer software, generate project schedules, maintain a record of work completed, parts/consumables used and project budgets.
  • Maintain laboratory machines, tools and equipment in order to ensure proper operation.  Clean and organize lab tools and equipment in order to maintain a well organized working environment.
  • Maintain a sufficient inventory of chemicals, parts and supplies in order to successfully complete ongoing research projects. Purchase replacement parts and supplies for laboratory analytical systems. 
  • Move equipment and materials with dollies, forklift or automobile as necessary to complete the tasks described above. Maintain current certification in forklift and automobile operation.
  • Supervise laboratory graduate students and post-docs in terms of proper procedures and conduct in the research lab spaces. 

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

In collaboration with the laboratory supervisor maintain and update operating manuals for select laboratory equipment and prepare and update lab procedures.  Maintain a log of lab activities.  Advise the shop manager of potential improvements to shop performance. Participate in training workshops and seminars as necessary to learn about new manufacturing processes and machines. Familiarize oneself with lab equipment.  Self-schedule work assignments based on input from the laboratory supervisor.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: 

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education:  Associate’s degree in a related field, or completion of related technical or vocational education/training

Experience:  9 years work-related experience in the design, construction, fabrication, repair and maintenance of mechanical or electronic equipment or systems or comparable experience and education

Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements: 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal & written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience using software systems to design projects, program equipment, and manage workflows
  • Understand basic schematics and drawings/blueprints, both mechanical and electrical
  • Extensive experience with welding, CNC, mill, lathe, and other shop equipment
  • Experience with plumbing & electrical systems
  • Experience using AUTOCAD, Solid Works, Microsoft Office
