Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, Housing Facilities, this position inspects and maintains exterior and interior painted surfaces, trimming and fixtures of buildings and other related structures and facilities. The incumbent will perform a full range of skilled work in the painting, finishing, and maintaining of a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces and structures in the Housing and Residential Life department.
Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student-centered and equity-minded approach in all communications and service efforts.

Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Repair - Work from oral instructions to meet the painting requirements of construction and alteration projects. Inspect interior and exterior painted surfaces, trimming and fixtures of buildings and other related structures and facilities for sign of deterioration or damage.
- General Tasks - Operate and maintain a variety of power and or hand tools and equipment. Assist in gathering materials. Upon completion of work, clean up job sites and return materials, equipment, tools, and or radios to designated storage areas. Clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties; report damaged tools and equipment.
- Administrative Tasks - Maintain accurate hours worked on each job. Submit completed trouble tickets or FSR to supervisor or designee for closing out project. Complete Material Transfer Forms and submit to supervisor for approval.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
The role requires comprehensive knowledge of applicable state codes, environmental regulations, and record-keeping procedures, with a strong emphasis on maintaining a safe and clean work environment. Proficiency in operating a wide range of tools and equipment related to the painting trade is essential, including skills in painting, finishing, drywall, and paperhanging, along with a solid understanding of safety protocols. The candidate must be adept in working with various materials such as paper, vinyl, and specialty coatings, and possess the ability to prepare surfaces, apply chemical solutions, and perform drywall taping and patching. Strong estimation skills for material and labor needs, as well as the ability to perform arithmetic calculations for surface area measurements, are necessary. Effective oral and written communication skills are required to convey clear, concise, and grammatically correct information, and to complete accurate documentation. The ability to identify surface damage or deterioration, work independently or lead crews, and collaborate effectively with colleagues, administrators, and customers is vital. Familiarity with standard safe work practices, equipment maintenance, and the physical ability to climb ladders and stairs are also important. The role demands a cooperative attitude, sensitivity to student needs, punctuality, and a commitment to professional development and continuous improvement in trade-specific skills.

Education and Experience
• Journey-level painter skills similar to that acquired through the completion of a painter’s apprenticeship program required.
• Experience working in a university setting, student affairs, or Housing preferred.
Physical Summary
- Heavy work - Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing.
Licenses / Certificates
• Valid California Driver’s License required.
Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

Compensation
The salary range for this classification is $30.89 to $35.49 per hour.
Time Base
Hourly/intermittent on call temporary position. Successful candidates may be appointed for a few days and up to one (1) year depending on the assignment. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
