Job Description:

This position assists the Director of Radiation Safety Office (RSO) in overseeing the overall operation of the radiation protection program and managing administrative tasks.  The RSO provides guidance and support for research, teaching, and clinical activities involving the uses of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation sources at LSU.  The RSO is responsible for developing and implementing mandated radiological control policies and procedures as well as ensuring safe practice to not only comply with federal and state regulations and licensing/registration conditions but also assure adequate protection of people, the environment, and the integrity of the University. This position serves as an essential role to fulfill the mission of the RSO.

Job Responsibilities:

-Supports the Director in the strategic administration of the Radiation Safety Office, ensuring alignment with University policies and regulatory compliance. Provides leadership and oversight for full-time staff and provides administrative services related to regulatory requirements, procurement, financial management, building oversight, and inventory control. Authorizes radiation use applications and grant proposals, and approves the design, retrofitting, and demolition of facilities containing radiation sources, ensuring all activities meet stringent safety and compliance standards. Deliver specialized radiation consultation and technical support to the LSU community, governmental agencies, and educational institutions. Engages with regulatory agency personnel during inspections, ensuring compliance and fostering strong inter-agency relationships. (50%)

-Evaluates, registers, and inspects various diagnostic radiation-producing equipment.  Reviews, revises, and engages in all regulatory programs for nuclear facilities containing Category 1 and Category 2 quantities of radioactive material.  Reviews radiation dosimetry reports.  Investigate and document unusual events and take corrective actions as necessary.  (25%)

-In support of the Director, provides oversight of the strategic direction and administration of the non-ionizing radiation safety program. Conducts comprehensive reviews of laser hazard analyses and implements control measures for Class 3B and Class 4 laser systems, ensuring safety protocols and regulatory compliance. (15%)

-Develops and executes comprehensive radiological emergency response strategies on a 24-hour basis. Other duties as assigned. (10%)

Minimum Qualifications:

-Bachelor's degree in Health Physics (HP) or Nuclear Sciences/Radiological Engineering (NS/RadEng) and HP degree requires 3 yrs. professional HP experience; NS/RadEng degree requires 5 yrs. professional HP experience. Working knowledge of federal and state radiation protection regulations governing sources of radiation as well as the theory and practices of Health Physics. Must be a Certified Health Physicist (CHP) by the American Board of Health Physics.
Must be a Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO) by the Board of Laser Safety. Must be able to handle and move 55-gallon steel drums. Must be able to pass a federal background check.  A valid driver's license is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree and experience in radiation protection program operation in an academic/regulatory/research environment as well as working knowledge of non-ionizing radiation and synchrotron/linear accelerators.
