Education Coordinator (Full-Time/Seasonal) - Camp Campbell

About the role

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Education Coordinator leads programs based on the principles of conservation biology, fosters environmental awareness, emulates YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility and is aligned with the California state framework and the Next Generation Science Standards. The Education Coordinator serves as a supervisor and mentor to the Naturalist team and assists the Outdoor Science Program Director in planning and leading staff training, coaching and supporting Naturalists, and various administrative tasks. This position may be required to be in the field as needed.

SALARY: $940/Week

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Directly supervise, coach and mentor a small team of Naturalists upholding a high standard of performance, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of payroll, and handling other HR duties as needed.
  • Assist in planning and leading staff training both at the start of the year as well as during weekly in-services.
  • Develop new environmental science curriculum and visual aids and organize and maintain existing teaching resources.
  • Conduct field observations of Naturalists to provide coaching and feedback to refine and enhance teaching and facilitation skills.
  • Assist in the care and maintenance of live animal nature lab, garden and compost facilities.
  • Assist the Outdoor Science Program Director with various administrative tasks including but not limited to preparing student cabin and group lists, giving parent information presentations for schools and other tasks as assigned.
  • Serve as on-call overnight program support staff on a rotational basis.
  • Assist Outdoor Science Program Director to provide coverage, including evenings and overnight support, as needed.
  • Research, write, and update lesson plans appropriate to program goals and aligned with state and national education standards; conduct natural science lessons establishing and utilizing responsive teaching situations; lead interpretive field activities in a variety of ecosystems.
  • Engage staff, volunteers, and participants within the environmental science arena at Camp Campbell; provide opportunities to learn.
  • Conduct ongoing training and supervision of cabin leaders.
  • Plan, organize and evaluate curriculum and instructional activities related to volunteer leadership development.
  • Expand and build new program opportunities and field lessons each year.
  • Attend meetings and trainings necessary to be successful.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The physical demands of the position include:

  • Visual and auditory ability to observe and to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
  • Ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Ability to climb, push, and pull.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects up to 30 pounds.

 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Minimum 1 year of experience working at an overnight camp, or 2+ years' experience as a Naturalist or similar role at a residential environmental education institution.
  • Attention attention to detail and good organizational skills
  • Creates a welcoming environment
  • Ability to effectively interact with participants, parents, and staff.
  • Certifications: CPR, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention & Risk Management.
