Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented Accounting Intern to join our awesome team here at Fairlawn! The ideal candidate will embody Fairlawn’s core values: Be Kind, Own It, Be Flexible, and Always Improve.
Do you have an ownership mindset and a passion for all things numbers? If so, our Accounting Intern role may be perfect for you! Based in Champaign, Illinois, the Fairlawn team member will be responsible for supporting the corporate accounting functions of the company. The Accounting Intern will report to the Director of Accounting.
What will you do?
- Exemplify the core values of Be Kind, Be Flexible, Own It, and Always Improve
- Accounts payable processing including invoice intake, coding, ensuring approvals, and issuing payment
- Resident utility bill-back processing including research and entering charges onto tenant ledgers
- Work order billing including processing intercompany transactions related to maintenance labor and supplies
- Support the month-end close procedure including bank reconciliation, reviewing general ledger accounts, troubleshooting incorrectly posted automatic entries, and reconciling loan balances
- Monitor shared departmental email inbox and route requests as appropriate
- Answer the door, greet, and direct office visitors
- Meet departmental expectations/deadlines and perform other duties as assigned
- Special projects as assigned
- Learn and ensure compliance with all Fair Housing Laws including local, state, and federal housing regulations (We provide training)
- Pivot, roll up your sleeves, and jump in where needed!
Requirements
Who you are - We’d love to hear from you if you:
- Are currently enrolled in a four-year degree program pursuing finance, accounting, business, or other related field
- Are proficient with relevant technology, especially Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
- Demonstrate superior attention to detail, high energy and a positive attitude
- Have an ability to give and receive real-time feedback with a positive mindset

Some additional things you will need:
- Valid driver’s license and dependable vehicle.
- Availability to work longer hours and weekends during department and company peak seasons
- Must be able to complete the physical functions of the position, not limited to the ability to sit for long periods of time at a computer and extensive keyboarding, and the ability to lift 20 pounds
