We are seeking a dynamic, professional Machine Shop Operations Unit Manager to join our Mt. Vernon, BWXT team!
What we do
Situated on a 100-acre site, our facility has 600,000 square feet of shop area and a 1,000-ton lift capacity from the shop to the river. The Mount Vernon facility is equipped with large CNC machine tools along with sophisticated welding and heat-treating equipment to produce components for naval nuclear reactors, which are used in submarines and aircraft carriers.
What you'll do
- Fosters a safe, organized, and respectful work environment.
- Ability to critically assess performance for improvements to drive performance to exceed or sustain business metrics and objectives.
- Develops strategies to drive and maintain Lean Manufacturing initiatives and continuous process improvement goals.
- Promotes a total quality work ethic and environment across the organization.
- Holds overall responsibility for the safe machining of a high consequence product line.
- Ability to identify and manage the requirements of the site as needed to ensure work is performed to meet the overall business' needs.
- Manages and oversees machine shop progress in meeting quality, schedule, and cost expectations.
- Manages volume expectations through maintenance of required staffing levels in support of 24/7 operations.
- Manages direct and indirect reports:
- Encourages a questioning attitude to ensure a safe work environment and the highest quality standards.
- Clearly communicates job expectations and performance requirements.
- Manages employee performance through the evaluation of expectations and objectives, including safe working practices, quality of work, compliance to procedures, and completion of deliverables.
- Experience coaching and counseling employees on unacceptable performance.
- Manages employee attendance and expense records through electronic systems.
- Supports front line managers in their leadership development and daily management activities in the machine shop.
- Builds and fosters a positive shop culture ensuring employees are appreciated, empowered and challenged to perform their best.
- Collaborates and coordinates with cross-functional teams to minimize disruption to production.
- Participates in safety and quality critiques. Completes corrective actions and takes an active role in fostering a learning organization.
- Develops man-hour estimates as needed to support contract proposals.
- Supports development and management of cost center budget.
- Leads or participates in special projects as assigned.
What we need from you
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical or business field is required along with a minimum of five (5) years of operations, engineering or quality experience.
- Possess a baseline understanding of machining practices and principles to include multiple machining methods and fundamentals of CNC machining.
