About the role
Job Summary: The Taxonomist, Master Data Management (MDM) is responsible for developing, maintaining, and evolving taxonomies, controlled vocabularies, and other classification schemes within the organization's MDM ecosystem. This role ensures the accurate, consistent, and user-friendly categorization of critical master data assets, enabling efficient data discovery, analysis, and effective decision-making across the enterprise.
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Development:
- Design and implement taxonomies, controlled vocabularies, and metadata schemas that effectively organize and classify diverse master data domains (e.g., customer, product, supplier, location).
- Conduct thorough analysis of existing data sets to identify patterns, relationships, and inconsistencies that inform taxonomy design and improvement.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) and data stewards to define and refine data elements and their relationships within the taxonomic structure.
- Maintenance & Governance:
- Maintain and update taxonomies to reflect changes in business needs, data evolution, and industry best practices.
- Establish and enforce data governance policies and standards related to taxonomy usage and metadata tagging, ensuring data quality and consistency.
- Oversee data cleansing and normalization processes to ensure data aligns with the defined taxonomies.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Partner with IT, data governance, business units, and other stakeholders to ensure the taxonomy aligns with strategic goals and organizational needs.
- Provide guidance, training, and documentation to stakeholders and end-users on taxonomy principles, usage, and best practices.
- Communicate complex taxonomy concepts and their business value to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Optimization & Innovation:
- Monitor the effectiveness of taxonomies in improving data findability, searchability, and overall data management.
- Identify opportunities to leverage advanced technologies like AI, machine learning, and knowledge graphs to enhance and automate taxonomy processes.
- Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements in taxonomy, ontology, and information management methodologies.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: A bachelor's or master's degree in library science, Information Science, Computer Science, or a related field is typically required.
- Experience: Candidates should have five to seven years of experience in taxonomy development, information architecture, or metadata management, preferably within an MDM context. Experience in designing hierarchical classification systems and controlled vocabularies is also expected.
- Technical Skills: Necessary technical skills include proficiency in data modeling and analysis, familiarity with taxonomy standards and tools, knowledge of metadata management best practices, and experience with relevant content or information management systems. Experience with scripting languages like SQL or Python can be beneficial.
- Soft Skills: Key soft skills include strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration, strong organizational and project management skills, attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy, and the ability to manage priorities in a dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with specific MDM platforms.
- Experience in Distribution, manufacturing sectors is a greatly preferred
- Understanding of data governance frameworks and compliance.
- Familiarity with knowledge graphs and semantic web technologies.
