Marqeta Inc., is seeking Senior Director, Associate General Counsel, Commercial who will lead Marqeta’s Commercial Legal Team and be an important strategic partner to the Revenue, Product and Finance Teams. As the Sr Director, Associate General Counsel, Commercial, you will provide legal and business advice on Marqeta’s customer and vendor contracts globally and help design and improve the contracting process. You will guide and mentor in-house attorneys and outside counsel in providing best-in-class legal services to Marqeta’s quickly growing business. You will build strong relationships across the entire Company and will have high leadership visibility with Marqeta’s Executives on all legal matters relating to Marqeta’s customers, partners and vendors. You are an inspiring leader with a team-oriented approach to leadership and have a passion for building efficient contract processes that delight your clients and customers. You will report to the Chief Administrative Officer.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead Marqeta’s in-house team of attorneys that support the sale of Marqeta’s products and services, partnerships and vendor agreements.   
  • Mentor and develop in-house attorneys, help to prioritize the team’s workload, set goals, and help the team to achieve successful strategic outcomes in a fast-paced business environment.
  • Assist with resolving complex issues in strategic customer and vendor agreements in the U.S. and internationally. 
  • Support Marqeta’s global expansion by partnering with cross-functional teams in sales, product, compliance, finance to help sell Marqeta’s products and services.
  • Help to drive strategy to improve our contracting process. Design and implement a company wide contract management system that optimizes contracting processes globally for multiple products and services and drives alignment with cross-functional teams in privacy, security, finance, and vendor management. 
  • Partner with the Legal Operations team on contract process improvement projects, bringing strategic vision and results oriented approach to achieve great outcomes for the Commercial Legal Team and the Company.  
  • Work collaboratively across the Legal, Regulatory and Compliance team on cross-functional priorities and initiatives. 
  • Oversee the development of agreement templates and playbooks for the Commercial Legal Team to drive scale, cross-functional efficiencies, and offer creative solutions where appropriate.  
  • Provide practical legal advice to the business and develop strong working relationships across the Company with senior management, cross-functional peers and other business stakeholders.

What We’re Looking For 

  • 12+ years of experience in commercial contracts in the U.S. and internationally, preferably experience at both a top law firm and in house. 
  • A player-coach that has experience leading and developing a high performing commercial team
  • Industry experience in FinTech, payments, financial services/banking and/or software technology strongly preferred
  • Strong negotiating and drafting agreements skills
  • A keen sense of ownership and the ability to independently drive complex projects to completion on tight timelines in a fast-moving, high-performing environment
  • A solid business focus with practical risk awareness and the ability to balance legal risk mitigation against key business objectives and risks
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work on teams and independently; ability to drive accountability and influence outcomes
  • The ability to challenge and be challenged both internally and with clients in a constructive and respectful way
  • Advanced problem solving skills, i.e., the ability to quickly digest a problem, evaluate various options/solutions and empower yourself and others to deliver
  • Highly responsive, customer focused and meets deadlines in a fast-pac
